Biography

Sarah Lindsey was born circa 1727, in Brunswick County, Virginia, a daughter of William LIndsey, who died before July 28, 1772, in Halifax County, North Carolina. In 1722, Larkin Chew, Chew-143 Sarah's maternal grandfather, in consideration of the sum of ten shillings (a pittance of a sum) sold to "William Lindsey" a parcel of land in the Parish of Saint George and County of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. ^[1]

Sarah Lindsey married William Copeland, born circa 1720, in Essex County, Virginia. Sarah and William became the parents of at least four known sons:

• Richard Copeland, born circa 1740, in Virginia, died circa 1771, in Chatham County, North Carolina, married Ann Dobson, in 1764

• Cornelius Copeland, born in 1750, in North Carolina

• James Copeland, born circa 1755, in North Carolina

• John Copeland, born 1762, in Chatham County, North Carolina, died September 30, 1844, in Wayne County, Tennessee. ^[2] DAR Ancestor #: A094384

On November 11, 1789, William Copeland, Sr. wrote his Will, in Chatham county, North Carolina. ^[3] In his Will, he names his sons, Richard, and John, and his brothers James and John Copeland. William's brother, John Copeland also has a son named William.
