SHELMAN DURHAM BIBLE RECORDS

THIS IS A PORTION OF THE ROBERT CURRY WALKER TRANSCRIPTION WHICH HAS BEEN RESEARCHED, DOCUMENTED AND CORRECTED BY JOAN EVANS, HOUSTON, TEXAS.

SOME OF THE DURHAM FAMILY

I. Mathew Durham father of Col. Shelman Durham was born in Orange County, North Carolina on the 16th day of June 1760. This is sixteen miles from Hillsborough. He died in Monroe County, Georgia the 3rd day of January 1834. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War of 1776.

II. Col. Shelman Durham[’s] grandfather and family[:] Mathew Durham, came from Virginia and settled in Orange County, North Carolina, on or near Fairview, which is sixteen miles from Hillsborough on the road to Cortham Courthouse. Some distance from Chapple Hill. He married a Miss Sendy [Lendy=Lindsey].

They had the following children:—

1. James Durham (by his first wife) was born May 21, 1750. He was a Baptist.

2. William Durham (by his second wife) was born May 21, 1752. He was a Baptist and died old.

3. John Durham was born July 16, 1757. He was a Baptist and died old.

4. Mathew Durham, a Baptist Deacon, was born July 16, 1760 and died January 3, 1834.

5. Ambrose Durham was born July 15, 1762 and died in childhood.

6. Lysias Durham was born November 12, 1765 and died February 8, 1838. He was a Baptist.

7. Mary Durham was born in 1772. She married a Mr. Piper, who died and left two girls both deaf and dumb. Went to east Tennessee.

8. Mark Durham was born August 15, 1775 and died October 22, 1841. He was a Baptist.

All of the older ones died in the country where they were born, except Mathew. He and his children emigrated to all south and west states.

Missing from this list is Thomas who is proven as a son via Mathew, Jr.'s RW Pension Application. Mary and Jane seem to have been merged into one child.

The MIMEOGRAPHED TYPESCRIPT of Shelman Durham's Bible Records. The Original Copy** which was sent to John Lafayette Durham was in the possession of Jennie (Durham) VanDyke, granddaughter of John L. Durham, until her death. It was copied by Robert Curry Walker, grandson of John L. Durham, in the mid 1950s and distributed to his siblings at a family gathering in Bellaire, Texas c1954-55. [Joan Evans]

These Bible Records were transcribed by at least one other descendant. Mrs. Melva Powell hand copied the records and a copy of her transcription is held by: Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center 650 FM 1011, Liberty, TX 77575

According to the Letter to John Durham which accompanied the Bible Records, a copy was to be sent to each of Shelman's SONS. It is a shame he did not send the records to his daughters.........I bet they would have taken better care of them!

Bremond, Texas February 3, 1876

John L. Durham,

My dearly beloved son.

I write you a card, and for the last few days being cold, I have been copying my Bible Family Record. As I could not get out in town.

I send you a copy, and will after I get copied to James and Frank, have sent one to William, and I ask you to copy it in your Family Bible for reference for yourself and Jennie, and your children in years to come. Don’t forget to record it and don’t lose it, it maybe of use to you and yours.

This leaves your Ma and I tolerable well, except for bad colds. The county is healthy so far as I know. Been pretty cold and had ice two mornings.

Your Ma joins me in love to you both and children.

Your Father S. Durham

The information posted here is marked for: 1. Obvious puncuation and spelling errors/corrections. 2. Missing children. 3. Birth dates that don’t work, i.e. two children born within less than 9mos; or someone b. 1904 and d. 1888. 4. Numbering errors. 5. Material added to Shelman’s original copy, i.e. deaths occuring after the date of the letter to John Lafayette. Note that some of the information was added circa 1903, i.e. Sanders’ son living in Sherman. 6. Information from the list copied by Mrs. Melvin Powell from Jennie Van Dyke’s copy.

NOTE: "Xerox" copies of a group of Sheman's letters show clearly how poor his handwriting was and to add to the confusion his capital "L"s and capital "S"s look exactly alike.

Lindsey-2657 and Lindsay-2838 appear to represent the same person because: This is clearly the same person. Please decide which spelling of LNAB and proceed with merge.

Lindsay-1713 and Lindsey-2657 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same spouse, same life and death, same location, same time frame, I would dearly love the mother to be Margaret Lindsay than Smoot, if you have better evidence, change it. Gene Adkins
