He enlisted in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was granted a pension of a month. Hezekiah and his family lived in that area over-which both Pennsylvania and Virginia claimed jurisdiction. The family then built flatboats and floated down the Ohio River to Maysville, Mason Co., Kentucky. They remained here for awhile, then traveled on to Campbell Co., Kentucky. This was their residence for a short time until becoming one of the earliest settlers of Ohio Twp., Clermont Co., Ohio, before 1800. His wife's family came, as did the Nichols family. He married Eliza FISHER in 1767 in Baltimore Co., Maryland. She was born 9 Oct 1752 in Ft. Pitt, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Adam FISHER and Sarah NICHOLS. My first indentification was on David Lindsey's pension papers, R6356, which indicate he served until the end of the War. Derry Township supposedly was one of the places the Scotch-Irish settled and took its name from Londonderry, Ireland. Charles K. I have seen the book you mentioned, LINDSEYS OF AMERICA, when I was starting my research a few years ago at the Newberry Libary in Chicago... It is interesting that the DAR Patriot List shows your Hezekiah as serving in Virginia while son John was born in Westmoreland Co., Pa., which had been Bedford Co. till 1773. Your Hezekiah must have served in Augusta County, Virginia, which was so close to those Pennsylvania mountain counties...I drove through that area last spring on I-70, and could hardly believe the few miles between these areas where our ancestors lived...Pennsylvania and Virginia area right there together on the upper Potomac River..." • This is from the Lindsey rootsweb message board from Susan Grabek concerning land sales and speculation on Hezikiah's family. Dear List, I hope that all of you who requested that I send the Thorndale works by attachment have received them. If you haven't, please let me know and I will try again. I sent all the snail mail requests out on Friday and Saturday, so you should get those in the next few days. And Carol, I'll get yours out this afternoon or tomorrow. It is sweltering here, and I usually venture out after the sun sets or before it rises! I have been studying the Long Marsh material by Thorndale to see if I could determine the location of the land that Hezekiah Lindsey owned on or near the Marsh. My goal is to figure out how Hezekiah and thus the other Fort Pitt Lindsey's, including my elusive William, will tie into the Lindsey's of the Marsh. I have a copy of a 1770 deed of release that I obtained from the Library of Virginia that refers to Hezekiah as an adjacent land owner in a transfer of land from Edmond Lindsey Sr. to his son Jacob Lindsey. Thorndale hypothesized that Jacob Lindsey might be a son of Edmond Sr. but the proof was not found until 1990, well after Thorndale wrote the letters. I have determined that the land Hezekiah "owned" is shown on the map on page 7 of Thorndale letter 3. It would be Parcel A, B, or C on that map. Below this message I have pasted a link to a web page that I created so I could show an illustration of the land I am referring to. I colored in the map on page 7 to sort out the owners, and I inserted it on the web page. My coloring job is crude, but it does help to show which Lindsey's owned which parcels of land. What I have found interesting and also puzzling is that on March 1, 1770, the date of the lease, Edmond Lindsey Jr. was named as the owner of the adjoining parcel. One day later, on March 2, Hezekiah Lindsey's name replaced all the references to Edmond Jr. in the release. Thorndale clearly shows Edmond Lindsey Jr. as the owner of the land. So why was Hezekiah written into the release? At first I thought that maybe he had inherited the land, but these Lindsey's never seem to have given any land away for free. Even the land that Thomas willed to his children in 1769 was later sold to them by Edmond Lindsey Sr. I can only imagine that there must have been a monetary reason to write in Hezekiah, perhaps a way to save on taxes. Does anyone have any ideas that might shed light on this? The other thing that I am mulling is what this means as far as Hezekiah's kinship with the Long Marsh Lindsey's. The land that he may have owned was originally owned by Edmond Lindsey Sr., who sold it to Edmond Lindsey Jr., whom Thorndale refers to as the presumed son of Edmond Sr. Can we presume that Hezekiah might also be a son of Edmond Sr., or at least closely related? According to family tradition Hezekiah and Edmond Jr. were brothers, though with a father named David. Though Thorndale says Edmond Sr. had an unnamed wife, his wife Elizabeth was named in many land transactions. I think it is safe to conclude that this was Elizabeth Beasley, who married Edmond Lindsey in Baltimore Co., MD in 1725. Could Elizabeth Beasley have been the mother of Hezekiah? There are numerous ties between the Beasley's and the Fort Pitt Lindsey's, including an Alice Beasley who lived with Hezekiah's family for a time in Westmoreland Co. PA, and whom John Lindsey, the son of Hezekiah, referrred to as his cousin. (link to a common belief that Elizabeth Beasley was Hez's mother, however she could have been an aunt.) If you are interested and have some time, please take a look at the deed and the map. I'd appreciate any feedback about Hezekiah's ties to this family. • The History of Clermont County said the following men came from PA after 1796: Hezekiah Lindsey, Jesse Swem, Archibald Gray,Nethaniel Donham, William Abercrombie, John, Jacob and Daniel Light, Alexander Rob, John, Abner and Joseph Fagin all came from Pennsylvania. William Abercrombie, Nathaniel, William, and Able Donham along with Hezekiah Lindsey all attended the First Ten-Mile Regular Baptist Church in New Richmond. William Abercrombie sold land to Robert, Able, and John Donham. He also sold land to William Lindsy and Daniel Light. These men evidently were friends. Hezekiah was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War,serving as a private in the 9th Regiment, commanded by Colonel John Gibson of the Virginia Line for three years. He enlisted in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was granted a pension of a month. Hezekiah Lindsey and his family came with Isaac Ferguson from Pennsylvnnia, and lived near him in Kentucky; and after coming to Clermont settled below him on the river-bottoms. He died about seventy years ago, leaving sons named Manley, John, Philip, Hezekiah, William, Elijah, and daughters who married Joshua Brown, of Ohio; John Fisher, of Monroe; John Gilman, Elijah Mattox, and Jesse Swem, all of Pierce. John Lindsey and his brother Philip settled in Brown County. Hezekiah married a sister of Reuben Laycock, and settled east of Palestine, in Pierce, where he died at the age of eighty-four years. Of his sons Philip removed to Kentucky, John died in Pierce, Levi was drowned in the army, William removed to Illinois, Stephen became a Baptist minister, and Marion still occupies the homestead. Several of the daughters married,Rachel, David Wheeler, and Nancy, John Reece. 1 2 Sources: Text: Lindsey, Ken from evansville on the internet. Text: Karsten, Mel... Dec, 1996

  • http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohclecgs/newsletter/revolution.html HEZEKIAH LINDSEY came from western Pennsylvania with the Fergusons and settled on the river bottoms, near New Richmond. He served in the Westmoreland regiment. He died about 1810 leaving children, to wit: Manley, John, Philip, Hezekiah, William, Elijah, Mrs. Joshua Brown, of Ohio, Mrs. John Fisher, of Monroe, Mrs. Jesse Swern, all three of Pierce township. Captain Lindsey made a dashing record in the service as a lieutenant, and in the Pennsylvania State archives is specially mentioned to Washington’s favor.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hezekiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hezekiah:

There is a deposition found on Ancestry.com for a John Lindsey in Brown County, Ohio. He states that Alice Beasley was living in the house of his father in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and that she was hired by his mother to work for her about the house. That Andrew Chalmers came to visit Alice there and later left with Alice and they were married. https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/112660645/person/230105102836/media/c93860be-5ada-4f76-aae4-81b1cafae8ae?_phsrc=sls10&_phstart=successSource

****Hezekiah Lindsey is NOT the son of a David Lindsey [as has erroneously been repeated through written genealogies], DNA research has proven several valuable points:

1. Hezekiah Lindsey's YDNA has been tested and assigned to Haplogroup I-M253. 2. Hezekiah Lindsey, b. 1747, was the ancestor of L0038 in Lindsay Surname DNA Project Group 2. 3. YDNA proves a link between Hezekiah Lindsey and Edmond Lindsey Sr that could be father/son or uncle/nephew or cousin. 4. YDNA also links to a Stephen Lindsey, b. ca. 1775, who happened to follow Hezekiah to Kentucky and to Ohio. Stephen's mother's maiden name was BEASLEY, and sister to the Alice Beasley taken in by Hezekiah after the Revolutionary War.

I find this very interesting. My direct ancestor was Ruth Beasley sister to Alice Beasley. Alice was married to Andrew Chalmers. Andrew and Hezekiah were traveling companions per sources that I have.

From the pension application for Hezehiah Andrew made statements in support of Hezekiah. State of Ohio Clermont County: On this 5th day of June 1818 came personally before me Alexander Blair a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas within and for said County Andrew Chalmers and being duly sworn according to law deposeth and saith that he saw the above named Hezekiah Lindsey at Fort Pitt in the State of Pennsylvania in the year 1780 that he traveled having obtained a furlough with him while both of them were on their way home about 40 miles that he this deponent understood and does verily believe that the said Hezekiah had served in the American Army of the revolution against the Common Enemy. S/ Andrew Chalmers After the Revolutionary War ended Alice met Andrew Chalmers who had just returned from the war and was a traveling companion of Hezekiah Lindsey. When Alice first met Andrew she was living in the home of David Lindsey and working in the household. Andrew came to visit later and they were married on June 20th 1785. Her husband was a veteran soldier of the Revolutionary War.

The Lindseys are interconnected with the Beasley family. My ancestor Ruth was married to William Dollar of Frederick County, Virginia. He was a soldier in the 2nd Virginia Regiment. There are references to the Lindsey family in his pension file.

Does anyone have the sources/documentation of either one of these marriages. I have several dozen pages for Hezekiah and not one of them mentions a wife's name. All we do know for sure is that whoever she was she had died by 1820 when he gave affidavit for his pension that he had no family with him.

Lindsey-59 and Lindsey-46 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Patricia,

I am fairly certain these two are the same rather than the Lindsey-59 being the son of Lindsey-46. I think it was just a bad GEDCOM import from the DeCoursey mess. According to the info I have in my Ancestry tree from my research the Hezekiah that was the son of David Lindsey and Mary Fleming, married to Barbara Fiates and Elizabeth Fisher and was the father of Phillip Lindsey (my 4th great grandfather).
