Biography

Alex Lineberry was born in 1842 in rural Chatham County, North Carolina. After his military service, he married Susan Fox, daughter of Joseph Fox and Elizabeth Dorsett. After Susan passed away, he married Lola Brooks, daughter of Francis Brooks and Mary Petty.

Alex's family made their living in the cotton industry, farming and working in the cotton mills in Chatham County. Before the turn of the century, the family moved to Alamance County where most of the children held jobs in the cotton or hosiery mills at very young ages. After Alex's death in 1909, Lola was left by herself to raise the girls in Burlington, North Carolina.

Military

Alex and his brother were members of Company G, 26th Regiment North Carolina Troops, also known as the Chatham Boys, during the Civil War. His military service was summarized in North Carolina Troops[1]:

"Private Alexander N. Lineberry enlisted in Chatham County at age 20, March 6, 1862. He was present or accounted for until wounded at or near Globe Tavern, Virginia, August 21, 1864. He returned to duty in January-February, 1865, and was detailed as a teamster. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865."

His wounds at Globe Tavern were also reported in the North Carolina Standard on August 31, 1864:

"Headq'rs 26th N. C. Reg't, August 22d, 1864, Messrs. Editors: Please publish the following casualties in the 26th N. C. T., Kirkland's Brigade, in the engagements yesterday near the Weldon Railroad, south of Petersburg: ... Company G - (Chatham co) ... Wounded, private A N Lineberry, flesh wound both legs, piece of shell... Respectfully, J. R. Lane, Col. Com'g."

The extent of Alex's wounds are summarized in his own words on his Confederate Pension Application in 1906 as:

knee joint left leg -- right leg between knee & foot -- was so incapacitated by wounds that I did no more active service, was detailed in Hospital Services
