Biography

James Lloyd was born in Lower Canada in 1830, the fifth child of David and Sarah Lloyd. This parentage and birth date are clearly stated on his 1889 burial record.^[1] The death certificate of James' sister Joan, gives the maiden name of their mother "Bloodworth".^[2] James was baptized in Jan 1833 at St. James Methodist Church in Montreal, at the same time as his younger brother Edward.^[3] The record also confirms his birth date.

He married Agnes McAdam of nearby New Glasgow, Lower Canada, in 1855. Shortly after the marriage, James and Agnes settled in Ware, Massachusetts. It was a textile factory town, and given James' trade as a blacksmith, one supposes that heading south provided more employment opportunities than available in the less developed Lower Canada economy of that time.

were born in Massachusetts and both the 1860 and 1865 censuses show the family continuing to reside in that State - 1860 in Ware and 1865 in Springfield, Hampden County (James' much older sister Joan also lived in Ware in 1860).^[4][5]

In about 1866, the family returned to Canada East, where their last three children were born (in St. Lin, Terrebonne, near New Glasgow)

2. William Benjamin, b. March 1871; m. Mable Gertrude Moody, 28 July. 1896; d. 23 June 1958; and
3. Jeannie Ella, b. 18 Aug 1875; m. Arthur Fobes Littell, 26 April 1899; d. 7 Jan. 1968

and where the family appeared on the 1871 Canadian census.^[6] By 1881, the family had moved to Bolton township in Brome County.^[7] And by 1881, their oldest daughter had left home (she married Levi Bailey in 1878). The other four surviving children remained at that moment with their parents.

At some moment after 1881, James and Agnes relocated to East Bolton, Quebec. He continued to practice his blacksmith craft - in the 1889 Eastern Townships Directory, he was listed in the East Bolton section as "blacksmith"^[8].

James passed away in East Bolton, Quebec in 1889 at the age of 58. He was interred in East Bolton cemetery. His wife and son (John) Wilson were witnesses to the burial record.^[9]. The following notice appeared in the newspaper^[10]:

"East Bolton. Death has again visited us and removed loved ones. Mr. James Lloyd died of catarrah of the lungs July 6th, after an illness of four weeks, aged 62 years. His two sons came to administer his wants from East Range (sic East Ray, a "stop" in Bolton Twp.), also a daughter, to attend his funeral, which was held at the Methodist Church the following Tuesday. His family have our sympathy in their loss."

Wife Agnes survived another 19 years and in 1890 moved to the United States to live in Rindge, New Hampshire with her Daughter Susan and husband Arthur Wellington.^[11] Rindge seems to have become their new family home, since all four of James' and Agnes' surviving children (Mary died in Canada in 1890) were married there - Susan in 1886, John in 1892, William in 1896 and Jeanie in 1899.
