Biography

He was born the youngest child of Elmer Bruce Lloyd and Inez Minerva "Sissy" Herrington.[1][2] He attended Pensacola High School, graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1951, and obtained a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington in 1956.

Following completion of his degree he worked at the Physical Research Laboratory at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. It was while living in Michigan that he was first introduced to the woman who would later become his wife, Luella Jean Rote. The two were invited to dine at the home of Gif Jones, the head of the lab where Winston worked. When telling the story to his children later, Winston and Luella said they met at the home of mutual friends who correctly thought the two would enjoy each others' company and on their first date the two went square dancing, but Winston's autobiography suggests that they went to the square dance immediately following the meal.[3][4]

On Thanksgiving weekend in 1957, Lui (as Luella was called) was invited by an old friend, Robert Hughes, for a boat ride in Lake Saint Clair, to embark from Detroit. It was to be the last trip of the season, before the boat would be put into winter storage, and Hughes' wife and another couple would also be present. Lui and Winston had a wonderful time and, after a hint from Hughes that as the captain of a boat in international waters he had the authority to perform marriages, Winston proposed, Lui accepted, and the two were married. A few months later, probably in January, the two celebrated a renewal of their vows in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the presence of friends from their college days.[5][6]

The birth of their first child occurred a bit before anticipated, in Chicago, Illinois, where Winston was attending an American Chemistry Society (ACS) meeting. Shortly thereafter, Winston accepted a job at the Naval Stores Research Station [apparently working for the USDA] in Olustee, Florida and the family moved to nearby Lake City, Florida. Their next two children, both boys, were born in Lake City, after which they moved to El Paso, Texas, where Winston had accepted a faculty position at what was then Texas Western College. The school was later integrated into the University of Texas system and became University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Winston remained a faculty member at UTEP until his retirement, after which he stayed as Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemistry.[7][8][9]

In September 2016, Winston was admitted to the hospital. Following his hospitalization, in October 2016, he moved to Tucson, Arizona to be near his daughter and her family. He died in his daughter's arms at 11:45 a.m., 19 December 2016.[10]
