Biography

George Lloyd was born in England in 1815 and christened on July 9, 1815 in St. Leonard's, in Bilston, Stafford, England. He was the son of George and Mary Lloyd. He married Rebecca Fellows in 1839 and had four children with her. In, 1847 his wife Rebecca, daughter Mary, and sons George, William and Samuel immigrated to the United States. The 1850 US Census finds him in Pittsburgh, PA with his wife Rebecca, daughter Mary, and sons George, William, Samuel, and John. Rebecca died in 1863 and George remarried in 1866.

Research Notes

(1) Find-a-Grave erroneously gives George's date of birth as 15 June 1816. Church records prove George was baptized on 9 July 1815. Most likely, the error on Find-a-Grave is a typo.

(2) Find-a-Grave mistakenly states that George Lloyd and Rebecca Fellows were married in 1840. Parish records of their marriage gives the date as 15 Apr 1839.

(3) George does not appear with other members of the Lloyd family immigrating to the United States, from the passenger manifest of the ship Samuel Hiehs, arriving in New York from Liverpool on 7 Sept 1847:

  • Rebecca Loyd, female, 30
  • Mary Ann Loyd, female, 7
  • George Loyd, male, 5
  • William Loyd, male, 2
  • Samuel Loyd, male, 0

George may have come over earlier, although his son Samuel was born in March, 1847. One must conclude that George left England no earlier than July, 1846. Another explanation is that George was on the ship with his family, but was left off the passenger manifest.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
