A History of the Parish of Gerrans 1088-1914 - Part 1 - Farm & Farmers

"By 1881 John Lobb had married Elizabeth Adams and was farming there, his household comprising his wife, six children, his parents-in-law James Adams and wife, together with a child's maid and a farm servant. In 1891, while still farming Pollaughan, John Lobb was described as Relieving Officer. He now had fifteen children and his father-in-law, now a widower, continued to live with him. John Lobb had taken possession of the farm by rack lease for 14 years in May 1874 from Richard Pendarves Johns. Following the death of Richard Pendarves John, the last of his line at Trewince, Pollaughan was sold to its tenant farmers, the Lobbs. John Lobb and his wife had twenty-one children, eighteen of whom survived childhool. He therefore enlarged his house considerably. The new wing was built with bricks from the works at the neighbouring farm of Metherscollyn."

John and Bessie had 20 children, four sets of twins, eighteen living to maturity, many reaching their late 80's and 90's. Needless to say, they became accomplished disciplinarians, each child having specific duties to perform, the eldest daughters carrying the care of the younger children.

They were devout Methodists, and no form of amusement was allowed on the Sabbath. Another part of their religious discipline was that they were all, except mother that is, required to walk some distance to and from church each Sunday. One family tale handed down was that, if at any one time the supply of shoes was limited, the early risers got the better pairs for the day.

The children received the basic education of the day and a number were able to serve apprenticeships which stood them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

In addition to farming, John acted as a Lay preacher and Relieving Officer in the district. As a Relieving Officer, he was responsible for the welfare of tenants, for example, the distribution of boxes from the Landowners to their Tenants in the real Boxing Day tradition.

Six short years after the birth of their last child in 1894, Bessie died from complications of peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix which, requiring emergency surgery, was performed on the kitchen table at Pollaughan. (Note: she did not survive this surgery)

John's second marriage was to Louisa Elizabeth Pope (1843-1936). From what I was able to learn, she was known as "Mater" to the family as the children did not feel comfortable calling her Mother. John and Mater lived out their years on The Lugger, in Portscatho near Truro, Cornwall, England. Their home, which John bought in 1921 after retiring from farming at Pollaughan, was called "Ivy House" after one of his daughters. Ivy House is still in the family and was made available to use six Cornish & Canadian cousins during our stay in Cornwall.

John Lobb Jr. (1889-1973), the sixth child of John and Bessie, married Chrissie Crewes (Nov. 1914-1980. The attached is a copy of the 1962 newspapaer article about Uncle John and Aunt Chrissie (Note: see John Lobb Jr.) At the time of writing (1985), my cousin, Ivan Lobb and his wife, Joan, (descendants of John and Chrissie) and their family, live on and run the Pollaughan Farm.

"The first Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in Churchtown on the former Nampity Green, a licence having been granted in April 1801 by the Diocese of Exeter ‘for a house to be set apart for Religious Worship by a Congregation of Protestant Dissenters’.(p.64) ‘From the entries in the chapel accounts it is evident that Methodism appealed to a cross section of the community. As well as the farming families of Thomas, Martin, Lobb, Olivey and Ferrell the master mariners of Portscatho were much in evidece."
