Biography

Charity Lockwood was born about 1750.[1]

She married William Curry on 3 Oct 1769. They had several children.

She passed away in 1832 at the age of 82. He gravestone inscription reads "Charity wife of Wm. Curry died October 12, 1832 aged 82 years, 9 months, 6 days."[1][2] Her gravestone can be viewed here.

Research Note:

Her Profile (on FamilySearch.org) may include incorrect information re Charity Lockwood as daughter of Jonathan Lockwood (1707-1742 b. & d. Conn.).

The source for this parent relationship is the "Revised Merritt Records" comp. by Douglas Merritt. Published 1916 by T. A. Wright in New York. This information states only this:

"WILLIAM MERRITT (at page 193) married Charity, born 1743, daughter of Jonathan Lockwood.
Child: Elizabeth" (The date of their marriage is not stated)

See: https://archive.org/details/revisedmerrittre1916merr/page/192/mode/2up

The Charity Lockwood who married William Curry has one (more reliable) source - her original headstone.

Inscription:
CHARITY,
Wife of
Wm. Curry,
DIED
OCT. 12, 1832,
Aged
82 y'rs 9 mo. 6 d's (therefore b. 1750)
Lived with her husband 63 y'rs. (m. 1769)
Friends and physicians could not save,
This mortal body from the grave;
Nor can the grave confine it here,
When Christ shall call me to appear.

This inscription implies she remained married to William Curry until her death in 1832.

Also of note is that her birthplace is uncertain - it would likely have been either New York or Pennsylvania, but might also have been Connecticut. There doesn't appear to be a reliable source for her birth place.

The child Elizabeth Merritt's birth would likely conflict with the births of Curry children between 1770 - 1791.

(FS has alleged daughter Elizabeth Merritt born 1782 - d. 1874.)

It seems likely there are two Charity Lockwood's being confused.
