Maria Catherina Loesch was born in Feb 1730, in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of George Loesch (1699-1790) and Anna Christina Elisabetha Walborn (1700-1782).

24 Feb 1730: Christening of Maria Catharina Loesch at Reed's Church in Tulpehocken[1]. Possibly, the sponsor was Maria Catharina Schell, but she did not marry Peter Schell Jr until later that year, so in Feb 1730, her name was Walborn. Alternatively, the sponsor was Maria Catharina Unknown, wife of Peter Schell Sr (~1680-1750)

16 Apr 1759: marriage to Johannes Lischer (1719-1782) [2]John Hirst and Friedrich Ziegler were also married in the same ceremony.

Johannes Lischer came with the first party of settlers in 1753 and was selected to be the future messenger between NC and PA, was to "study the road, the country, etc." He is last mentioned in the Records in 1758, and appears to have settled permanently in Pennsylvania thereafter. He is probably the John Lisher who married Maria Catharina Loesch, sister of Jacob and Hermannus.[3]

Died: 1802 in Stokes County North Carolina.

Buried: Nazareth Moravian Cemetery, Nazareth, Northampton, Pennsylvania.[4]

Marriage & Family

1759: Maria Catharine Loesch (1730-1802) married John Lischer (d. 1782). They had the following children:

  1. Maria m Samuel Russell
  2. Johannes m Sarah Whitsell
  3. John George m Anna Flickinger
  4. Anna Elizabeth m Heinrich Bollinger

Research Notes

6 Feb 1750: Brother Lischer went to Gnadenthtten as a messenger.[5] Indeed from the Archives it appears that Johannes Lischer often played the role of escort of Moravians between Bethlehem, Heidelberg, and Wachovia.

1753: Her husband Johannes Lischer was among the first group of Pennsylvania Moravians sent to build a new Moravian settlement on the Wachovia Tract, in North Carolina (today: near Winston-Salem). Johannes Lischer returned to Pennsylvania later in 1753, then traveled back to North Carolina in Apr 1754, accompanied by Jacob Friis.

10 Apr 1756: Bretheren Sauter and Lischer made us very happy by their unexpected arrival from Wachovia.[6]

28 Apr 1756: The Bretheren David Zeisberger and Lischer arrived with two Indian Chiefs and three other Indians, who have to take a message to the Susquehanna from Philadelphia.[7]
