Biography

Washington Logsdon lived in Appalachia, in Kentucky.
This profile is part of the Logsdon Name Study.

George Washington "Washington" Logsdon was born on 23 May 1819,[1] probably in Hart County, Kentucky. He was the son of William James Logsdon and Martha Sego.[2]

Washington married Susanah C. "Susan" Linder, probably in Kentucky, possibly in about 1839, when he would have been about 20 years old. (The date of the marriage is estimated from the approximate birth date of their eldest child.) They had nine children who appeared on the various census returns, the first five born in Kentucky. The following list may well be incomplete, since it would not include children who died in infancy:

  1. Martha Logsdon (b. ca. 1840, Kentucky)[3][4]
  2. Phebe Logsdon (b. ca. 1842, Kentucky)[5][6]
  3. William Logsdon (b. ca. 1844, Kentucky)[7][8]
  4. Sarah Ann Logsdon (b. 16 Dec 1845, Kentucky)[9][10]
  5. Israel D. Logsdon (b. ca. 1848, Kentucky)[11][12]
  6. George Washington Logsdon, Jr. (b. ca. 1851, Iowa)[13]
  7. Thomas J. Logsdon (b. ca. 1856, Iowa)[14]
  8. James Logsdon (b. ca. 1858, Iowa)[15]
  9. Perdida Logsdon (b. ca. 1860, Iowa)[16]

Washington moved his family northwards from Kentucky to the frontier of Iowa in about 1849, settling in Jasper County.[17] By 1856, the area where he had his farm was in Clear Creek Township,[18] which had been organized in 1849.[19] In 1858, Independence Township was formed,[20] evidently including that part of Clear Creek Township where Washington had his farm. Two years later, Washington's farm, now in Independence Township, was valued at $1,100.[21]

In the 1860s, he moved his family south to Marion Township, Jasper County, Missouri, where his farm was valued at $1,300 in 1870.[22] Ten years later, in 1880, Washington and Susan were living next door to their son, James, and his family in the South East Suburbs of the town of Carthage in Jasper County, Missouri. Washington's occupation was listed in the census as "teaming."[23]

George Washington "Washington" Logsdon died in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri on 15 Feb 1883. He was buried there in the East Cemetery, although his remains were moved to the Park Cemetery in 1907.[24]

Research Notes

Parentage: When adopted, this profile was attached to Joseph Logsdon and Nancy Wardrope as parents. Three factors support a different parentage: William James Logsdon and Martha Sego. First, the names of his children: His eldest known child, Martha Logsdon, would have been named for his mother and his eldest son, William Logsdon, would have been named for his father; his daughter, Sarah Ann Logsdon, would have been named for his wife's mother, Sarah Ann (Holt) Sego or for his sister, Sarah Ann Logsdon. There are others of his siblings whose names were duplicated among his children, if William James Logsdon and Martha Sego are accepted as his parents. Second, a George W. Logsdon, born in about 1826, has been documented as the son of Joseph Logsdon and Nancy Wardrope. It would be unusual to duplicate a living child's name. Third, a modern genealogy of the Logsdons which relied heavily on the author's correspondence with living descendants as well as on quoted documents, supported William James Logsdon and Martha Sego as this George Washington Logsdon's parents.[25] Anderson-27719 14:57, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

United States Census, 1860: The listing for Washington Logsdon's family in the 1860 census for Jasper County, Iowa is confused. On the third line of the family, where the eldest child in the household should have appeared, the name listed was "Martha Dawson." The next person listed was 15-year-old William, with ditto marks for his last name. The indexer for the image of the census page interpreted this to mean that William was William Dawson. The following lines include ditto marks for the last names of six more children, all interpreted as "Dawson." Yet the next line, in the same household, was for "Jeremiah Dawson," age 25, with his last name spelled out. Following his entry was "Louisa Dawson," age 6 months. Martha was one of Washington Logsdon's children, now married to Jeremiah Dawson and mother of Louisa Dawson. The others in the household would then be Logsdons, Washington's children. This is supported by the 1870 census from Jasper County, Missouri, which lists four of the children, in the same order and with roughly the same ages estimated, as Logsdons in Washington's household.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Washington by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Washington:
