Vincent Lombardi Sr was a New Yorker.

Vince Lombardi was an American football coach and executive in the National Football League (NFL). He is best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s, where he led the team to three straight and five total NFL Championships in seven years, in addition to winning the first two Super Bowls at the conclusion of the 1966 and 1967 NFL seasons. He is considered by many to have been the greatest coach in American football history.

Vincent Thomas Lombardi, son of Enrico "Harry" Lombardi and Matilda "Mattie" Izzo, was born June 11, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Mattie's parents, Anthony and Loretta, emigrated from an area several miles east of Salerno, Italy. Harry's parents, Vincenzo and Michelina, came from Salerno, Italy itself. All the Lombardis and Izzos who came over settled in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn. Vince was the oldest of five children.

In 1940, Vince married Marie Ann Planitz.[8][9][10][7]

Vince became an American football player and coach, best known for his role, during the 1960s, as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. During his tenure there, over 7 years, he led the Packers to a total of 5 National Football League championships, three of them were in a row, including two Super Bowl wins in 1966 and 1967! He never had a losing season as a coach - in the regular season, he averaged a winning percentage of 73.8% and 90% postseason. Overall, 105 wins, 35 losses, and 6 ties!

Many people consider Vince Lombardi to be one of, if not THE best, and most successful football coaches in the history of the sport. The NFL Super Bowl trophy is named after him.

On July 27, 1970, it was discovered that Lombardi had terminal cancer and he was admitted to the hospital. Friends, family, players, and former players came to visit. He received a phone call from President Nixon telling him that all of America was behind him, to which Lombardi replied that he would never give up his fight against his illness. He told Father Tim, his clergyman, that he wasn't afraid to die but regretted not accomplishing more in his life.

Vince Lombardi died in Washington, D.C. at 7:12 a.m. on September 3, 1970.[11][8] Over 1500 people attended his funeral.[12]

“I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." ” ― Vince Lombardi
