Biography

William Lindsay Love was born in North Carolina between 1821-1823, likely in May[1][2][3][4][5]. On 17 FEB 1842, he married Ruth Chamness in Randolph County, Indiana, USA.[6] About 1848, he moved his family to Wisconsin[7] and is listed as a farmer there with his family in 1850.[1] In 1860, he was listed as a saw miller living in Centre Township, Wayne County, Indiana, USA.[2]By 1870, he moved to New Garden Township in Wayne County.[3][4] where he is employed as a sawyer.

William Lindsay and Ruth Chamness had the following children:

  1. Wiley, b. in IN ca. 15 MAR 1842[1][2]; d. 17 Jul 1867
  2. Melinda, b. in IN ca. 1846[1][2]
  3. John, b. in IN ca. 1848[1][2]
  4. William, b. in IN ca. 1849[1][2][3]
  5. Rachel, b. in WI ca. 1851[1][2]
  6. Henry H, b. ca. May or June 1850[1][2]
  7. Ellen, b. ca. 1854[2][3]
  8. Jefferson [Henry?], b. ca. 1853[2][3]
  9. Isaac, b. ca. 1857[2][3]
  10. Mary, b. ca. 1857[2] d. 14 APR 1861[8]
  11. Martha [Jane?], b. ca. 1858[2]
  12. George, b. in IN ca. 1860[3][4]
  13. Emma A., b. in IN ca. 1863[3][4][5]
  14. Thomas Albert, b. in IN ca. 1865[3][4]
  15. Elizabeth, b. in IN ca. 1869[3][4]
  16. Leona, b. in IN ca. 1875[4]

By 1895, William had moved with his wife, daughter Emma, and son Leoren to Kansas.[9][5] He died there in 1903 and is buried alongside his wife Ruth in the Dresden Cemetery, Cunningham, Kingman County, Kansas, USA.[10]

Research Notes

It is not clear where the kids born during the 1850's were born. In the 1850 census, the older kids are listed as being born in Indiana, except for Rachel, who is listed as being born in Wisconsin. However, in the 1860 Census, Rachel is listed as being born in Indiana, so the birthplace of the other 1850's kids is in question. Since they are listed as living back in Indiana in 1860, all the kids after this are presumed to have been born in Indiana.

In 1880 Census, Bertie and Mamie Love are grandkids of William, but not sure who the parents are.

Williams birth year started as about 1820 or 1821 in the earliest records, then was recorded/estimated as 1823 in the later censuses. Currently using the later birth year, as is listed on his headstone.
