Samuel Lowman was born in 1718 in New Castle, Delaware. His parents were Samuel Lowman, Esquire and Letitia Woods. His parents died when he was young. His father was a Justice of Supreme Court N.C. for Sussex and Kent counties and died when Samuel was 11 years old. His mother, Letitia, died when Samuel was 15 years old.
Samuel first appeared in public records abt. 1734 in Kent County, Maryland, when a young widow, Honour Carroll, daughter of Cornelius Crowly, deeded Samuel 50 acres of land for “respect & affection”. Stipulating in the original deed that if Samuel failed to be worthy of her trust in him, the property should go to Philip Carroll, her son by a former marriage. Obviously, Samuel was on probation. Probably no more than 17 years old, but an orphan and on his own. Samuel doubtless had been attracted to the young widow and she was saying to him in effect, “If you think you’re man enough to marry me, here is the land- let’s see if you’re really ready to settle down to business. Samuel doubtless also proved himself, because Samuel Lowman, planter, and his wife Honour sold the same property a few years later for 40 pounds and invested in other Kent County land the following year.
Samuel married Honour Crowley in 1735 in Kent, Maryland. She was born abt. 1710 in Cecil County, Md. Her parents were Cornelius Crowley and Honor Symes. They had at least 5 children together.
Samuel Lowman died 01 May 1758 in Kent, Maryland when only about 40 years old, and his widow Honour Lowman was appointed administratrix in the Kent County Court. An inventory amounting to 184.11 pounds was made on 22 May 1758. Honour died sometime after Samuel, no date found. It is not known where they are buried.
Samuel’s son, Richard, moved to Berkeley County VA, where a George Lowman had lived for some 40 years and where a James Lowman had come more recently. Richard and George were about the same age and it can only be supposed they were brothers. Therefore, it is assumed that Samuel Lowman was the father of George Lowman.
