Biography

Michael Lutz has German Roots.

Michael Lutz was born about 1742.[1][2]

Michael began his emigration from Nürnberg.[1][2]

Michael married Elisabeth sometime between 1765 and 22 May 1766 in Roßlau.[3][4]

Volga German
Michael Lutz was a Volga German.

Michael left Lübeck on 14 September 1766 via the Galliot "Der Jan" with the Skipper Markus Dragun with his wife Elisabeth and son, Johann.[1]

When Michael arrived in the colony of Frank in the Saratov province of the Russian Empire, he was with his wife, Susanna and his son, Georg Franz.[1][2]

By 1798, Michael had married Christina Wagner and the family continued to live in Frank.[1][5]

Michael died in 1806 in Frank.[6]

Research Notes

  • In "German Migration to the Russian Volga (1764-1767), Origins and Destinations"[3], the entry for Michael Lutze and Elisabeth Kesisch and has a marriage date of 22 May 1766. Mai notes that Karl Stumpp, in "The emigration from Germany to Russia in the years 1763 to 1862"[4] has a marriage date of 1765. Both have the marriage in Roßlau.
  • It is unknown if Elisabeth and Susanna are the same or different individuals. When Michael left Lübeck, he was recorded with Elisabeth and his son Johann. When he arrived in Frank, he was recorded with wife, Susanna and son, Georg. Neither George nor Johann are in the 1798 census for Frank. It was not uncommon for settlers to marry en route and many settlers died en route. By 1798, the sons could also have migrated elsewhere.
