Churchwell served in the Confedrate States Army, enlisting in Wythe County, VA on 01 June 1861. He mustered out on 01 DEC 1862. His service was with Company I, 10th Virginia Infantry. Prior to the war, Churchwell had worked as a blacksmith.
Churchwell applied for, and received, an annual pension from the U.S. Government for service in the War. He applied on 12 JUL1900 stating reasons for qualifying as old age, general infirmity and continued constipation. He signed with his mark, indicating that he was likely illiterate.
He is buried at Marshall-Mabry Cemetery in Carroll County, Virginia.
