Marcus is the son of John "Good John of Islay" Macdonald and Princess Margaret Stewart. He is often confused with Marcus MacDonnell the son of Somerled MacDonald, the son of Alexander "Alasdair Og" Macdonald Lord of the Isles, the son of Aonghas Mor) "Lord of Islay".
Marcach (Marcus) MacDonnell was the 1st Chief of Knocknacloy, County Tyrone. [1][2] The McDonnells of Knocknacloy are a branch in Ireland of the Scottish Clan Donald; descendants of Somerled Macdonald, the son of Alexander Macdonald and Juliana MacDougall. [3]
They were Gallóglaigh, mercenary soldiers who offered their services to the O'Neills of Tyrone, and fought against the MacDonnells of Antrim.
