John MacFarlane was born on the 2nd of June 1830, at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland,[1] the 7th of 11 children of Alexander MacFarlane and Agnes Houston.[2][3]

At 22, on the 29th of November 1851, he married Margaret Carmichael at Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, and they had 9 children.[4]

The family emigrated to Queensland on board the Helenslee in 1862.

John MacFarlane was a Draper, on the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and Mayor of Ipswich,

At 64, on the 7th of March 1894, He died at Sandgate, Queensland, Australia and was buried in the Ipswich General Cemetery, Ipswich, Queensland, Australia..[5][6][7][8]

By the death of Mr. JOHN MACFARLANE, M.L.A.- which we chronicle with the deepest regret in to-day's issue - Ipswich will lose one of its most esteemed citizens. He has been in the district for over thirty years, and has watched its development for the whole of that period with the warmest personal interest. The expansion of its social and commercial institutions always secured spirited sympathy from him. He had an ever-present faith in the capabilities of the district as a manufacturing centre, and displayed much energy in pushing forward the cotton and woollen industries in the days of their inception. That he had the full confidence of the general public is evidenced by the fact that he continuously occupied a position on the directorate of the Woollen Company from its establishment, in 1875, up till the time of his death, and was returned on every occasion that he stood as a Parliamentary candidate for the suffrages of the electors of Ipswich. The good work that he did from time to time for the local Hospital has had no inconsiderable influence in placing that institution in the position of usefulness that it holds to-day. In politics, matters of social importance claimed his greatest attention, and he was ever on the alert to protest against injudicious or extravagant public expenditure. A life-long abstainer, and actively connected with the temperance cause from his youth, he did much to promote the principles he advocated, and was mainly instrumental in having placed on the statute book of the colony a Licensing Act which admittedly embodies the most advanced temperance legislation in Australia. Honesty of purpose and the conscientious discharge of public duties were his marked characteristics, and he was esteemed by all classes of the community. Even those who differed from him in politics accorded him a full measure of credit for the straight-forwardness of his actions. His career proved that he could always be depended upon to fulfil any pledges privately or publicly made. This was probably one of the secrets of his success as a politician. The ideal that he placed before himself was a noble one, and he laboured with rare conscientousness to live up to it. In the Assembly there were few men more highly esteemed by his colleagues than JOHN MACFARLANE. They knew that he had the honesty and perseverance of the best type of his countrymen, and they respected him accordingly. The deceased gentleman, it may be said, has died in harness. Despite the cares of business and the advancing weight of years, he stood at the last general election as a Parliamentary candidate for Ipswich, and was once again honoured with the confidence of the electors. He has represented the town in the Legislative Assembly for seventeen years, and his memory will he treasured as that of a man who was faithful to the high trust reposed in him.
