Alexander MacFarlane was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 2 Dec 1796.^{[citation needed]} the 3rd of 5 children of William and Agnes (Cochran) MacFarlane.^{[citation needed]}

He married Agnes Houston in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland on 13 Jan 1822.^[1]and they had 4 children.

He died in 1881, possibly in Glasgow.<^{[citation needed]}

Reason for staying with "MacFarlane" despite "McFarlane" in Scotland Marriages source: "Clan MacFarlane (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Phàrlain [ˈkʰl̪ˠãũn̪ˠ ˈfaːrˠl̪ˠɛn]) is a Highland Scottish clan. ... Note that the prefixes Mac, Mc, and M' are interchangeable."^[2]
