Johannes Adam Matter was born on 04 Apr 1774, in either Dauphin Country or in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized at Salem Evangelical Church, Killinger, Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on 10 Apr 1774. "Johannes" was his Taufname (assigned at baptism), but he went by his middle name Adam as was the custom among German-speaking men of that period.
The 1840 United States Census shows him living in Warwick Township, Lancaster County; that area was, by 1850, part of Penn Township. He owned a very small farm with a single-story log house and a ground barn, according to probate papers.
He appears to have been buried in the Gibbel/Gibble Farm Cemetery, with many of his relatives by blood and marriage, near White Oak, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
