Colin Alexander Mair was born on 25 November 1893. He was the son of Alexander Mair and Eliza Varty.
His father Alexander passed away in 1895. His mother remarried, to 41 year old widower Colin Paterson on 1 August 1911 in St. Peter's Parish Church in Pietermarizburg, Natal.
Colin fought in the 1st World War with the 10th Hampshire Regiment, gaining the rank of Trooper and then Lieutenant. He entered the Theatre of War in German South West Africa in October 1914. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star.
At the age of 22 Colin 19 year old married Elizabeth Jackson (the daughter of Alexander Ritchie Jackson) on 23 August 1916 in the Thorp Road Presbyterian Congregational Church, in the District of Prestwich, by Licence[1]. Colin was a 2nd Lieut. with the A.S.C. and a Solicitor's Articled Clerk of Park Hall Camp, Oswestry. Elizabeth was a spinster of 19 Bath Street, Newton Heath. Joseph Richardson Wolfenden and Florence Jackson were the witnesses.
They went on to have three children. Colin and his family settled in South Africa.
He passed away on 3 December 1939 at the age of 46[2]. Cause of Death was recorded as Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Colin was buried in Maitland Cemetery, Maitland, City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa[3].
