Biography

Volga German
Johann Konrad Major was a Volga German.
Johann Konrad Major has German Roots.

Family #146 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #52 in the 1798 Grimm census.
Family #101 in the 1834 Grimm census.

Johann Konrad Major was one of the first children of Germans living in Russia born in Russia. He was born in 1767, but it was after the census was taken in August of that year, because his parents are listed in that record with no children. Konrad is first named in the 1775 census.

1775 Grimm Census [1]

Family # 146
Head of the Household Georg Maior [sic], age 44
Wife Anna Margaretha Maior [sic], age 34
Child #1 Johann Konrad Maior [sic], age 7 years 6 months
Child #2 Georg Christoph Maior [sic], age 2
Child #3 Anna Margaretha Maior [sic], age 4 years 6 months

By 1798, Konrad had married Elisabeth Schäfer and the couple had two children. They continued to live in his parents' household.

1798 Grimm Census [2]

Family # 52
Head of the Household Georg Major, age 63
Wife Margaretha Frank Major, age 52
Child #1 Johann Konrad Major, age 30
Wife of Child #1 Elisabeth Schäfer Major, age 30
Grandchild #1 Johann Jakob Major, age 9
Grandchild #2 Katharina Major, age 5

Konrad Major died in 1834, before the census was taken that year, since his death was noted in that record. Also note that in this record his first name is Georg, while in the 1775 record, his first name is Johann. This is probably a census taker error. I chose to use Johann, the name that appeared in the record closest to his birth, in this profile. If I learn differently, I will update this profile accordingly.

Konrad's wife is not named in the census and was probably also deceased, since there probably wasn't enough time to mourn, remarry, and move to another household before the census was taken later that year. Their son Johann Jakob Major became the de facto head of the household after his father's death.
