Biography

...knighted with Edward, prince of Wales, on 12 May 1306; was a conservator of the peace for Dorset in 1307, 1308, and 1314; served in Scotland on various occasions between 1314 and 1322, and was summoned to go to Ireland in February 1317 to resist Edward Bruce, and in 1325 for service in Guienne. He was again summoned for service in Scotland in 1327 and 1331, and in 1338 had orders to guard his manors near the sea against invasion.[1]

Marriages

  1. Eleanor Gorges, and had issue.
  2. Joan Foliot, and had issue. After the death of Maltravers, Joan married Alexander de Venables.[2]

Excerpt from Joan Brewes
Madden, Bandinel, and Nichols in an article in Collectanea Topographica Et Genealogica concluded that a Joan Foliot and John Mautravers had the following daughters,

  1. Joan the wife of Ralph Warren and Alan Cheney
  2. Alice the wife of Thomas de Rodburgh and John Browning
  3. Elizabeth the wife of Roger Folville and William Latimer.

They also concluded that, after the death of John Mautravers, Joan Foliot had then married Alexander Venables from whom there was no issue. However, they were unsure of whether there was any relationship between this Joan Foliot, and Joan Foliot-41 the wife of Nicholas Percy and their children. Indeed, Madden et al make no mention of a Peter de Brewes at all.
But F.N. Craig in a latter paper correctly identifies that this Joan Foliot had successively married Nicholas Percy, John Mautravers, and Alexander Venables. He also cites evidence that Joan Foliot and Nicholas Percy had a daughter named Joan who married Peter de Brewes of Wiston. In a still latter article he reports that Joan Foliot by her marriage with John Mautravers had also the following children Alice, Elizabeth, and Joan. Though F.N. Craig cites no evidence for this Joan Mautravers. Complete Peerage makes a similar conclusion to F.N. Craig that John Mautravers and Joan Foliot had three children, Alice, Joan, and Elizabeth. In this regard, Complete Peerage cites a Cheshire inquisition post mortem and Hutchins, but note his accounts are discrepant and are obviously incomplete. [3]

I see that the mother has been disconnected - I am PM for her profile for no other reason that I'm (supposedly) descended from this line and her profile was orphaned. Do we have any idea if she is a real person or not or a fantasy creation? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Maltravers-9

I would move this query to the G2G forum. Maybe they can shed some light?

Warning: Check the data.

A mother's birth date (Maltravers-9 born 1180) should not be more than 67 years before the birth date of one of her children (Maltravers-6 born 1266) .

A mother's death date (Maltravers-9 died 1222) should not be before one of her children's birth dates (Maltravers-6 born 1266) .

A child's death date (Maltravers-6 died 4 Jul 1344) should not be more than 120 years after their mother's death date (Maltravers-9 died 1222) .

This would mean the child lived to be over 120.

A birth date (Maltravers-6 born 1266) should not be more than 60 years before or after a sibling's birth date (Maltravers-23 born 1205) .

Duplicate brother? Some kind of failed merge: "Father of John (Maltravers) Mautravers KB, John Maltravers VI"

I tried to propose the merge tonight, and it says, this can't be done because it's already been done. And yet, they're still both linked as discrete profiles from the parents. Thoughts?
