Lewis was born on 10 Dec 1872 in St. Clair, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. (Birth Index, Draft Card) He was the son of Charles Manaige and Mary Benjamin.

He was first married to Rosa Dorothea Moga, née Shifsky. (1910 census)

His second marriage was to Bridie Fitzgerald (b. 1878), a gaelic speaking woman born in Ireland. (1930 census, DC) In 1901 she had married Dan Fitzgerald.
