James was born in 1932. He was the son of William Maner and Pluma Horn. He passed away in 2013.

Obituary

The Rev. James Oliver Maner, 81 of Grenada, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 13, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. He was born to William McKinnely Maner and Pluma Horn Maner on Jan. 14, 1932 in Ashland, Ala. He graduated from Holtville High School in Deatsville, Ala., and the University of Mississippi with a BS in Pharmacy in 1958. He also attended Belhaven University to prepare for missionary service. He received his BD and ThM degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. He also attended Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, S.C., where he earned the Doctorate of Ministry degree. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving for over two years in Germany. He was a pharmacist for eight years. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in Oxford, Ala., by the North Alabama Presbytery, PCUS. In August, 1967, James and his wife, India, and daughter, Stephanie, left for Brazil as evangelistic/educational missionaries for 25 years. While in Brazil, Dr. Maner taught at the Bible Institute of the North, Presbyterian Seminary of the North, Recife, PE and The Independent Presbyterian Seminary of the North in Fortaleza, CE. He served on several school boards and traveled extensively in the Northeast of Brazil preaching and teaching. Upon retirement from missionary service, he served as pastor of Nettleton Presbyterian Church in Nettleton, Miss., and Unity Presbyterian Church in Plantersville, Miss. After retiring to Grenada, he preached on a regular basis at First Presbyterian Church and New Hope Presbyterian Church in Scobey. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, India Crowder Maner; two daughters, Elizabeth Maner of Franklin, Tenn., and Stephanie Thayer (Cletus) of Arlington, Wash.; a son, William C. Maner (Kim) of Laurel; and seven grandchildren, Emile, Liam, Corban and India Thayer and Bella, Causey and Merci Maner. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen Campbell (Doyle) and Sylvia Watts, both of Millbrook, Ala., six nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law, Polly Maner of Atlanta, GA. The Rev. Maner was preceded in death by his parents; an older brother, John Edward Maner (Nell), and his twin brother, Albert Sidney Maner. Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Grenada from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Dr. Don Howie and Mr. Tony Franks officiating. Interment will be in Oddfellow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 387, Grenada, MS 38901; The Gideons International, P. O. Box 36, Grenada, MS 38902; or the American Bible Society, P. O. Box 96812, Washington, D.C. 20090-6812. Garner-Harper Funeral Home is in charge.
