Disputed Origins
A previous version of this profile claimed that Robert was son of Samuel Mansell (1715-1779) and Susanna Gassaway (1725-1784); working against this theory:
Robert was born about 1740 in Orange Co., Virginia.[citation needed]
Samuel and Susannah were born and died in Maryland; Susannah was only 15 years of age in 1740.
At present, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) indicates Robert Mansell was not the son of Samuel Mansell and Susannah Eleanor Gassaway.
There are some sources that state the marriage of Samuel and Susannah occurred in 1737 or 1748.[citation needed] Since Susannah has a birth date of 1725, it would be more likely that they would have married closer to 1748, not as early as 1737. In either case, the birth of Robert, who was born in 1741, being Susannah's son is even more unlikely, based on her age at the time of his birth.
All of the sources for Samuel state he was in Maryland. There is nothing to show the family was in Virginia.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
Hello Stephanie and Linda, as I haven't heard back from you regarding my message below, I plan to remove Samuel Mansell and Susannah Gassaway as the parents of Robert in a couple of days. Please get back to me or respond to the G2G question as soon as possible if you have any concerns about this. I'll complete the proposed merge at the same time. Kind regards, Gillian
Hi Stephanie and Linda, it seems that Samuel Mansell and Susannah Sassaway may not be Robert Mansell's parents (see points under the 'Uncertain Parents' heading on this profile, and the discussion under this G2G question https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/984069/profile-havwhat-solution-believe-parents-profile-correct). A merge of this profile with Robert Mansell Sr. is ready to be completed and it would be great to resolve this issue in conjunction with completing the merge. Please could you get back to me, or contribute to the G2G question, particularly if you have any sources for Robert's parents. Alternatively, if you agree that the parents don't seem to be correct it would be great if you could let us know that too! Thanks so much, Gillian
