William Lovit Mansell was born November 19, 1812, in Jackson County, Tennessee, and he died March 15, 1876, in Hamilton County, Illinois. He was the son of Richard Mansell and Elizabeth Mobley. He died at the age of 63, and is buried in Ten Mile Cemetery in McLeansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois.[1]
William was married four times. He first married Arrena K. Carr around 1834 in Jackson County, Tennessee, and they had seven children. They moved from Jackson County, Tennessee to South Carolina in 1842, back to Jackson County, Tennessee, about 1847, and then to White County, Illinois.[2] Second, he married Sarah Stephens on October 20, 1851 in White County, Illinois,[3] Third, he married Susan Calvin Reader on August 24, 1853 in White County, Illinois.[4] Fourth, he married Juda Martin Ventress on September 2, 1862, in Illinois,[5] William is thought to have had 21 children, but three of those are unidentified and may have died in infancy.[2]
William migrated to the Hamilton Co. area with the Carr and Harper families from Jackson County, Tennessee. White County was the parent county of Hamilton County,[6] and he acquire 40 acres of land in White County on May 1, 1852.[7] On the 1860 census, he is listed as a farmer,[8] but on the 1870 census, he is listed as a merchant.[9] One reason for the "merchant" category is probably because he was appointed Postmaster of Nights Prairie in Hamilton County, Illinois, on October 2, 1868 and stayed until his death.[10]
