Biography

"Ralph, according to the pedigree submitted by his brother John in obtaining a family coat of arms, was the second son of Lancelot Mansfield and Anne (Eure) Mansfield. Ralph was most likely born 1555-57. He died 18 November 1633 Donegal, Ireland and his remains were interred at the Donaghmoore church." [1]

"Ralph married Margery Plais of Richmondshire and by 1587 they were the parents of two children: 1. John, baptized October 1580 ; died apparently by 1654; married at Tilston Cheshire by lic. dated 2 December 1606 Isabel Leigh of Rosther, Cheshire, daughter of John and Jan (Brereton) Leigh; and (2) Ralph, born 1585, predeceased his father."[2]

"Ralph Mansfield was in the service of his cousin Lord Ralph Eure before 13 March 1595/6 when Eure wrote Lord Burghley that 'Raiph Mansfeld is my captain of Harbottle' Castle. Mansfield had advanced to the position of one of Eure's two deputies by 3 March 1596/7 and was keeper of Redesdale Castle by 8 June 1597."[3]

In 1601, Ralph served as an official of the Council of Wales.[4] In 1608, he received a grant of 1,000 acres partly in Killygordon, County Donegal. [5] At Killygordon, Ralph served as a captain. "Captain Ralph Mansfield, undertaker of 1,000 acres, his men and arms" under his command are listed here: "Those holding swords only: Thomas Ellis, James Benny, William White, William Wald, John Bell, Robert White, William Glen, James McTanlease, Thomas Dunlelly. Those holding swords and pikes: William Gryffyn. Those holding sword and calleuer: Thomas Gray, Robert Adam, Ralph Mansfield, Thomas Clarke, Thomas Ffayrefax, and Thomas Ffyrefax the younger." [6]

Ralph received a land grant in the Precinct of Liffer, Barony of Raphoe and County of Donegal in 1608. [7]

"Captain Ralph Mansfield, 1.000 acres called Killneguidon., d. 10 Nov. 1634, succeeded by his son and heir, John Mansfield, of age and married.[8]
