William married Nancy Green and had children born in West Flamborough Township between 1806 and 1813.
During the War of 1812, William Markle served as a private in the 2nd York Militia. On June 4, 1812, he volunteered and was selected at 31 years of age for service in the 2nd Flank Company. [1]
He served from September 25 to November 24, 1812 in Captain William Applegarth’s Flank Company on the Niagara Frontier and was present at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13th. [2]
There was more than one William Markle serving in the area. The following two payroll records may or may not have been this William’s as well.
He was absent without leave from September 21 to October 7, 1813 from Captain Samuel Ryckman’s Company. [3]
He served from September 5 to 12, 1814 in the same company. [4]
His second wife was Sarah Green. They had children born between 1823 and 1835.
On April 14, 1835, Sarah Markle made a land petition as the wife of William Markle of West Flamborough Twp. She was the daughter of John Green, a deceased Loyalist of the same township. John S. Green certified who she was and that she had not previously received a land grant from the Crown. George Hamilton certified that John and William had both done their duty during the late war. The petition was recommended. [5]
John Green, Sarah's father, may have been Green-1150. Who had a daughter Sarah, Green-1195.
On January 23, 1836, William Markle, a former private in a flank company of the 2nd York, received 100 acres on the west half of Lot 13, Con. 7, Enniskillen Twp. [6]
Most men sold their militia land grants because they were well settled elsewhere and did not want a new homestead.
