Biography

Hannah Marshall was born 4 Mar 1747 in Augusta, Virginia, daughter of William Marshill and Rebecca Dixon.

Hannah married Mordecai Mendenhall 05 Nov 1771, Cane Creek MM, Orange, North Carolina. To this union were born:

  1. Rebecca (Mendenhall) Elmore 1772 - 1825
  2. Mordecai Mendenhall 1775–1833
  3. Charity (Mendenhall) Mills 1777 - 1858
  4. William Mendenhall P 1779 - 1840
  5. Hannah Mendenhall 1782 - 1808
  6. Alice (Mendenhall) Moore 1786 - 1851
  7. Ruth Mendenhall 1788 - 1859

Transcription of Marriage Record of Hannah & Mordecai:

" Whereas Mordecai Medinghall son of Mordecai and Charity Mendinghall of the County of Guilford and province of North Carolina And Hannah Marshill Daughter of William & Rebeckah Marshill of the County of Chatham and province aforesaid Having Declared their intentions of marriage with Each other before several monthly meettings of the people Called Quakers at Cane Creek in Orange County and province aforesaid According to the Good order used among them & having Consent of parents and relation Concerned their said proposals of marriage was allowed by said meetings. Now these are Certify whom it may Concern that for the full accomplishing their said intentions this fifth Day of the Eleventh month & in the year of our Lord 1771 they the said Mordecai Mendinghall & Hannah Marshill appeared in a publick meeting of the said people at their meeting house at Cane Creek aforesaid & the said Mordecai Mendinghall taking the said Hannah Marshill by the hand Did in a Solemn manner openly Declare that he took her the said Hannah Marshill to be his wife promising with the Lords assistance to be unto her a faithful & Loving husband until Death should separate them or words to that purpose and then & there in the same assembly the said Hannah Marshill Did in like manner Declare that she took the said Mordecai Mendinghall to be her husband promising with the Lords assistance to be unto him a faithful and Loving wife until Death should separate them or words to that Effect And Moreover they the said Mordecai Mendinghall & Hannah Marshill she according to the Custom of marriage assuming the name of her husband as a further Confirmation thereof did then & thereto those presents set their hands ---- ---- ---- have being present at the solemnization of said marriage Do as witnesses hereunto Do subscribe our names the Day & year above written twelve names inserted Viz. Mordecai Mendinghall Hannah Mendinghall Mordecai Mendinghall Charity Mendinghall William Marshill Rebeckah Marshill Hannah Standfield"

Hannah died 15 Feb 1802 (aged 55), New Market, Jefferson, Tennessee, and is buried in Lost Creek Friends Burial Ground, Jefferson County, Tennessee.
