Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

William Marshall was born 6 Aug 1724 County Tyrone, Ireland.[1][2] Some undocumented sources show a birthplace of Charlemont, County Armagh.[3] The Marshall family sailed from Ireland along with Ann's father, brother and an apprentice named Solomon Shepard. Jacob died enroute or shortly after arrival. Ann also died 1729 leaving the two boys, William and John, orphaned.

He married Rebecca Dixon 28 May 1746 at New Castle, Delaware (Hockesin MM). The record states he was resident in Chester, Pennsylvania[4]

He passed away 28 May 1803 in North Carolina.[5][6] He was buried at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting Cemetery.[7]

He wrote his will 24 Mar 1803 and notes that he was then resident in Chatham County.[8] The brief one page document gives the plantation to son John followed my small monetary bequests to children Hannah Mendenhall, Thomas, Debora Hobson, Ruth Hinshaw, Rebecca Hinshaw, Ann Davis, William, and Dinah Hobson.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

More on birth location. Myers "Immigration of the Irish Quakers" mentions William once in the context of two sons of Ann Griffith Marshall (see pages 353-54). There is an inference that he may have been born Grange MM near Charlemont but Myers does not state this.

The place of birth here doesn't seem to have a basis other than trees imported from Ancestry in 2004. Hinshaw (who is cited as an excellent source in the Sources) based on his Quaker research placed his birth in County Tyrone, not County Armagh. William is a 5th great grandfather. I would be happy to help clean up this bio which suffered a few merges and add some additional source material if the PMs are ok with that.

Marshill-10 and Marshall-400 appear to represent the same person because: Sorry about the duplication -- I was tripped up by the spelling.
