Caffery was born about 1808 in Montgomery, Virginia, and moved with his family to White, Tennessee while still a toddler.[1] He married Francis in Tennessee by the mid-1830s, and they moved to Hamilton, Illinois by 1840.[2] By 1850 they had moved again and were raising a family in Franklin, Missouri, all children born in Tennessee except the youngest, born in Illinois:[3]
John Martin, age 18
Caroline Martin, age 14
Meadow Martin, age 15
Ann Martin, age 10
Caffery married Mary Jane Caldwell in Texas, Missouri on 28 Jul 1871.[4][5] She was quite a bit younger, listed as age 28 in 1870, and appears to have been raising a family with Caffery prior to their marriage, with the youngest child apparently hers, and with her young brother also in the home:[6]
Sarah A Martin, age 13
William R Martin, age 1
John M J Calwell, age 10
Caffery was 71 and Mary Jane was 39 in the 1880 census, now the mother of three children:[7]
William R, age 11
Steven A, age 9
David A, age 6
