Biography

Samuel B. was born in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. He went to California where he became a prominent and influential citizen; he was residing in California when his father wrote his will in 1859.

Samuel Barclay Martin also went south to Demopolis, Alabama. He went back & forth from there from about 1848 until he brought his wife and kids out in 1860 (they appear in two censuses from 1860).

In 1854, Samuel B. Martin and West J. Martin purchased Rancho Santa Rita. They sold the ranch in 1865, and moved to Oakland.

Samuel Barclay Martin is buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Gardens in Colma, San Mateo County, San Francisco, California, USA.

MARTIN - In Napa, March 30, Samuel B. Martin, a native of Hagerstown, Md., aged 74 years. Funeral will take place this day (Tuesday), at 2 o'clock, from 20 Fifth street, San Francisco. Interment private.
