Biography

Elizabeth Martin was born in Stithians, Cornwall to father James and mother Elizabeth. She was christened at St Stithians on 8 January 1726, her father James was noted. Another Elizabeth was christened and buried a year earlier in the same parish, the father was also listed as James. It wasn't uncommon at the time to name a child after a deceased sibling. [1]

Elizabeth's parents were married in Illogan, Cornwall on 10 February 1710. The groom was noted as being from Stithians, so her mother was likely from Illogan. Her surname was not listed. [2]

Elizabeth probably grew up in Stithians, where she was christened along with the rest of her siblings.

Elizabeth Martin, of Stithians, married Nicholas Andrew on 11 April 1747 in the neighboring parish of Perranarworthal, Cornwall. [3]

Elizabeth and Nicholas' first child, Ann, was christened at St Stithians in 1749. [4]

Elizabeth's husband Nicholas died on 27 May 1791, he was buried in Stithians which means they were likely still living there. Most of their children would have been grown and have families of their own by the time Elizabeth became a widow, their youngest son Thomas would have been seventeen. [5]

Elizabeth, a widow, died in 1809 and was buried at St. Stithians on 26 December 1809. [6]

Research Notes

  • Elizabeth's surname was spelled 'Marten' in her christening record.
  • I went through the St. Stithians parish burials line by line and there is no record of a death or burial of an Elizabeth Andrew in 1792. An Elizabeth Martin, wife of Henry, was buried in Stithians in 1792 however. 1773 wife of William Andrew, 1785 daughter of Henry Andrew, 1787 widow (but Nicholas was still alive), 1809 widow (after Nicholas passed.)
