Biography

Sarah Ann Martin was born 8 Jan 1866 in Lachute, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Thomas Martin and Sarah Jane Garvin. She married William John Hess on December 16, 1891, in her hometown. They had seven children in 13 years. She died 11 Mar 1930, in Graceville, Big Stone, Minnesota, United States, at the age of 64, and was buried in Rock Island, Illinois.

Mrs. William J. Hess

Mrs. Mary A. Hess, 1711 Sixth avenue, Rock Island, has received word of the death of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. William J. Hess, which occurred last evening at 6:15 o'clock in a hospital at graceville, Minn. Mrs. Hess was a resident of Rock Island 20 years before leaving here several years ago. The body will arrive in Rock Island Thursday evening and will be taken to the Hodgson and Hoban mortuary pending funeral arrangements.

The remains of Mrs. William J. Hess of Wheaton, Minn., resident of Rock Island county for 25 years, who died at 6:15 o'clock Tuesday evening, March 11, 1930, at Graceville, Minn., will arrive in Rock Island Friday night, according to a telegram received here today by Mrs. Mary A. Hess, 1711 Sixth Ave, daughter-in-law(mother-in-law) of the deceased. The body will be taken to the Hodgson & Hoban mortuary pending funeral arrangements. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery.

Mrs. Hess was 63 years of age. A paralytic stroke caused death. Mrs. Hess was born in Canada, Jan. 8, 1867. Her maiden name was Sarah Martin. On Dec. 16, 1891, she married William J. Hess in Canada. She received her education in Canadian schools. The Hess family made its home in Rock Island in 1892 and remained here until 1918, when it moved to Wheaton, Minn.

Surviving are the widower of Wheaton, Minn.; five children, Mrs. J.C. Breckenridge of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Glendon Stoebe of Fairmont, N.D., Albert of Barrie, Minn., and Herman and Helen of Wheaton; three brothers and one sister. Mrs. Hess was preceded in death by two children, William and Annie.
