Biography

Spencer Martin was born on 6 March 1772 in Augusta (later Monongalia) County, Virginia, the fifth of seven known children and the youngest of five sons of Charles and Elizabeth Burroughs Martin.

About 1793, when he was in his very early twenties, he married Mary "Poly" Snider in Monongalia County. She bore him seven known children, five sons and two daughters, including:

On 17 March 1808, about a week after his thirty-sixth birthday, he married Margaret Sturm in Monongalia County. She bore him ten known chldren, six sons and four daughters, including:

2. George Martin
3. Rawley Martin
4. Mary Martin
5. Matilda Martin
6. Marinda Martin

In 1798, Spencer was part of a group of relatives petitioning for the division and sale of his maternal uncle William Burrough's property in Delaware.

On 13 February 1849, a few weeks short of his seventy-first birthday, he died in Worthington, Marion County, Virginia, of unknown causes.

Spencer Martin's Will

In the Name of God Amen, I Spencer martin of Marion County and State of Virginia, Considering the uncertainty of the mortal life and being of sound mind and of disposing memory blessed be Almighty God for the same, doth make ordain and publish this my last will and testament of such things as God my heavenly father has blessed me with in the following manner to wit.

First I will and bequeath to my wife Margaret one third of all my real and personal estate of every kind and sort which may be on hand at my death including the thirds of the land with the buildings where I now live the third of the land I will to my wife will lay west of the present lane the lane being the east line which is to run straight with the same from ridge to ridge and laying parallel with the lane on the west so as to include one third part of my present lands this bequeathment I will to her during her lifetime

I also will and bequeath to my son Rolley E. Martin all my lands laying east of the present lane which joins Clemel Davis and Abram Smith’s lands and also adjoining that portion of land I have willed to his mother.

I will that out of the bequeathment made to my son Rolley E. Martin he shall pay to my daughter Marinda Martin the sum of seventy five doll. when she is twenty one years old.

I also will and bequeath to my son Dorsey S. Martin all of that part of my land joining Presley N. Martin’s land which I have I have not willed to his Mother and also that part of the land bequeathed to his mother I will also to my son Dorsey I will out of the bequeathment made to my son Dorsey Martin he shall pay to my daughter Sary ann Matilda Martin seventy five dollars at the age of twenty one years and also to pay my son William Martin out of said bequeathment twenty five dollars.

I also will and bequeath to my daughters Mary Bruneau and Nancy Mellon thirty dollars each out of my personal estate to be paid one year after my decease.

I also will and bequeath to my sons John S. Martin and Thornton F. Martin a peace [sic] of land joining Charles Swigley known my them as of the F{?}lowers land which I made a deed to my son Presley N. Martin for which is about ten acres this land I will shall be theirs when my son Presley N. Martin shall relinquish his rights back to me which as yet has not been transferred to the said Presley on the Commissioners books.

Lastly all the residue and the remainder of my estate I will shall be divided equally between my daughters Marinda and Sary ann Matilda and my son Thornton this I will they shall be paid too {two} years after my decease.

I hereby appoint my executors of this my last will and testament my son Thornton F. Martin and Jesse Sturms hereby revoking all others made heretofore by me in testimony thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of January 1849.

To wife Mary: one half of home tract bounded by Stuart’s Rd, and the State line, during her life, Negro woman Selvey and two of her children called Lucy and Win (Selvey’s other children to return to the estate), one third of my personal estate except the Negroes. After my wife’s death Silvy is to be a free woman.

To my oldest son Jesse: my Monongahela tract of land (400 a including mouth of Crooked Run).

To son George: 307 a. on Buffalo Cr. Where he now lives and my Negro man Arthur.

To son William: Negro boy Litt.

To son Spencer: 400 a adj tract where Spencer now lives and situated on waters to Traverbough. {Teverbaugh Creek}

To daughter Ann Harrison: Negro girl Pegg.

To son Presley: 400 a . where I now live except that belonging to his mother during her life, one Negro boy Abraham and one of the Negro girls bequeathed to his mother after her death and any other children of Negro woman Silvey.

Rest of my personal estate to be sold and divided equally among my sons George, Wm., Spencer, Presley, and daus. Elisabeth Randall, Ann Harrison, and gson Charles Martin, the son of Jesse Martin.

A middle name of Alexander is commonly seen on on line family trees that include this person. No source for this name at a time (18th century) when middle names were the exception rather than the rool.
