The following added by Dennis Stewart(16676). The best research on this family to date is the book, "History of The Mashborne, Mashbourn, Mashburn, Marsburn Family London England", by Mary Fern Souder. Matthew Mashburn wrote his will Mar. 26, 1826 in, what was then, Burke Co. NC. He only mentions four children by name, James, Thomas, Raburn & Lois, the last three still being minors, and then mentions his "other children" not by name(I hate it when the testator does not name all of his children). Matthew almost certainly had an older son Jessie Mashburn who was named after his brother-in-law Jessie Stroud. However, the mother of Jessie Mashburn is not certain(see Wikitree profile for Jesse Mashburn). The will also mentions "my beloved wife Susana" and their 328 ac. home tract. This plantation was on Muddy Creek east of what is today Marion, NC., also occupied by a remnant of Catawba Indians. Matthew Mashburn seems to have been earlier in Orange Co. NC. This is indicated by the 1781 Orange Co. marriage of Keziah Patton to Wm. Green and witnessed by her sister Susannah Stroud who would become Matthew's wife. The Mashburn men likely visited Burke Co. before actually moving there. This was common and opened up instances of social interactions with the people living there who would become their new neighbors. The Mashburns were in Burke Co. NC by the 1790 census. The three "daddy rabbits" were Matthew Mashburn, Drury Mashburn & David Mashburn (and a younger David). The Strouds were living next to them as shown by the census. In 1800 Matthew Mashburn, Wm. Green, Peter Stroud, and others served as road jurors. And again in 1810 viewing a road project on a road to Rutherford(Co. NC)were Wm. Green, Peter Stroud, Sr., Jas. Patton, Matthew Mashburn, Wm. Mashburn and others. Matthew's father-in-law Peter Stroud left 2 wills! One in 1812 and the other in 1821. Researchers found the 2 wills in an undated bill of complaint filed in the Court of Equity in(of all places)Haywood Co. NC(read it on Ancestry.Com). Peter's family continued to contend over his estate. The first will, 1812, gave property to his son-in-law Matthew Mashburn and sons Jesse Stroud, Peter Stroud, Jr. & Wm. Stroud. Peter, Sr. revised his will in 1821. In the latter will he gave Matthew Mashburn his negro servant boy Arthur. It was proved Jul. 1827 in Burke Co. NC.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Matthew by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Matthew:

Thank you for including the link to Mary Fern Souder's comprehensive book on the Mashburns. The profile has Matthew Mashburn as born c1765 but I think based on his children's estimated birth years that he was born closer to c1760. No evidence he had a middle initial. His son Daniel was not born in New Hampshire. Don't know how that got on there. Matthew was not born in Burke Co. NC but he had moved there before 1784. I can add an abstract of his 1826 will from Ms. Souder.

Burke Co. NC did not exist in 1765. Land records show the Mashburns first appear in Burke Co. NC by 1784 unless I'm mistaken.

Burke was not founded until 1777 before that I believe it was Rowan and Tyron fits in there somewhere

Mashburn-491 and Mashburn-129 appear to represent the same person because: Dates agree (read carefully). Married same woman

There is 65 years difference in their birth dates. Sarah and Susannah is not the same name. Sally is nickname for Sarah and Susan is nickname for Susannah.
