"3 Years after the Birth of Charles Reynolds Mathney, his father James, his wife & 2 other Sons Journeyed to Kentucky... Settling around Harrodsburg, KY" PG 4 Charles Reynolds Matheny, 1786-1839 : an Illinois pioneer
This man has usually been merged into another James, and given two wives and two families. The other James was older, and believed to have been born in Stafford Co VA, a grandson of William Wentworth Mathena. He is said to have married a woman named Mary LeMayne.
The sketchy records and family traditions of the James of this profile indicate he spent his life in close proximity to other members of the William Mathena family of Joppatown, Loudon Co VA, Kentucky and Indiana. This presents an alternate, and tidier, theory on who this James really was.
I suggest that James was one of the younger sons of William and Elizabeth Banberry Matheny . Family tradition says James married Diane Beaseley in Loudon Co VA. and in the late 1780s made his way up the Shenandoah Valley, as his proposed older brother Daniel was doing, and through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky., settling at first around Harrodsburg. He is found in Hardin Co KY at the time that his proposed nephews, Michael and Isaiah Matheny, were living there in the first decade of the 19th c. His son Samuel married there to a Frakes, in the same time period that Michael and Joshua Matheny married McKee sisters, whose brothers also intermarried with Frakes.
By 1810 James had moved across the Ohio River to Indiana Territory, settling in Harrison County, where he died a few years later. His signature and that of sons william and Samuel on an anti-slavery petition suggest that might have been an issue with him.
James died intestate, but distributions from his estate were made to the following children: Sarah Jane, died in Indiana; Elijah, died in TN; Richard, died in KY; William, died in IN; Michael, died in KY; Charles R., died in IL; Samuel N. died in Iowa; Noah, died IL; and Rachel, died unknown.
The widow was named Rebekah.
