Biography

Muscogee was born sometime between 1824 (as indicated on her grave stone) and 1826 (as recorded on 1850 census). She was the daughter of Joab Mauldin and his wife Judith. "Jane" Mauldin married William Brown, about 1843, Yalobusha County, Mississippi. ^[1] In 1850, Muscogee, apparently widowed, is enumerated on the federal census in the Yalobusha County, Mississippi household of her parents under the name Muscogee Mauldin. Her daughters Louisa and Mary are also included in the household, also under the surname Mauldin. ^[2] Shortly after 1850, Muscogee moved to Arkansas. Muscogee married Caleb C. Sullivent, 1857, Calhoun County, Arkansas.^[3] The marriage does not seem to have lasted long and the couple does not appear to have had any children. In 1860 Muscogee "Sullivan" is recorded on the federal census back in Yalobusha County, Mississippi with children Louise and Mary Brown. ^[4] In 1870 and 1880, Muscogee is recorded on the federal census in the Yalobusha County, Mississippi household of her married daughter Mary Brown Ward. ^{[5] [6]}Muscogee died in 1898.^[7]

Research Notes

There is a conflict as to the given name of the subject of the profile. The Find a Grave profile reports her name as Muscova though her grave stone merely indicates "M J." The 1850, 1860 and 1880 census entries all indicate Muscogee, though the spelling varies. 1870 alone indicates Muscova. Muscogee's 1857 Arkansas marriage record also indicates Muscogee. As such the 1870 census and Find A Grave records would seem to be outweighed by other evidence.
