Biography

Francesco is born to Domenico Mauro and Biagia Gagliardo in Corleone on 22 Jan 1874. He is baptized the same day. His godparents are named as Giuseppe and Francesca Sclafani. [1]

In the 1900 federal census of Brazos County, Texas, outside Bryan, taken 28 June, Dominick Mauro, 60, born in February 1840, heads a household with his wife of 30 years, Biagia, 52, born in April 1848, and children Stefano, 22, born in December 1877. (More children on next page.) All born in Italy. Dominick is a naturalized citizen. He emigrated in 1890. He works as a farmer on his own account. Biagia emigrated in 1896 and Stefano in 1897. Stefano is a farm laborer.[2]

Domenico and Biagia’s children, continued: Frank, 26, born in December 1873, Katrice, 15, born in July 1884, Joseph, 13, born in August 1886, and Luke, 9, born in September 1890, all born in Italy, all emigrated in 1896, and work as farm labor.

Next door are Luke Petronella and his family, also from Corleone.[3]

Frank marries Angelina Pascia on 11 February 1901 in Bryan, Texas. Their marriage record is attached to this profile. Angelina is called by the maiden name "Boss" in some records.

Frank and Angelina have eleven children: Mary (1902), Dominick (1904), Bessie (1906), Louis (1908), Frank Jr. (c. 1910), Carmela (1912), Nora (1914), Aline/Lena (1916), Vincenza/Vancie (1917), Josephine (1920), and Janie (1922).

In the 1910 federal census of Brazos County, Texas, taken 11 May, Frank Mauro lives near his parents and married brothers south of Bryan and Steele Store Road.

Frank Mauro, 36 (b. 1874), born in Italy, heads a household with his wife of nine years, Angelina, 27 (b. 1883), born in Texas. She has had four children all living. The children at home are Mary, 8 (b. 1902), Dominick, 6 (b. 1904), Bessie, 4 (b. 1906), Louis, 2 (b. 1908), and Frank, three months (b. Feb 1910), all born in Texas. Frank immigrated in 1897. He is employed as a farmer.[4]

Frank Mauro registers for the draft for WWI on 12 September 1918. He lives at Route 1, Bryan, Brazos, Texas. He is 44, born 22 January 1874 in Italy. He is a self-employed farmer at the same home address. His contact is his wife, Mrs. Frank Mauro, at the same address. Frank is short and of medium build with brown eyes and black hair.[5]

In the 1920 federal census of Brazos County, taken 17 January, Frank Mauro, 45 (b. 1875), heads a household on Tabor Road with wife Angelina, 37 (b. 1883), and children Mary, 17 (b. 1903), Dominic, 15 (b. 1905), Bessie, 13 (b. 1907), Louis, 11 (b. 1909), Carmela, 9 (b. 1911), Nora, 6 (b. 1914), Aline, 4 (b. 1916), and Vincenza, 2 (b. 1918). Frank immigrated in 1896 from Italy and his wife in 1897. Their children were all born in Texas. Frank is a farmer working on his own account at his home. Mary, Dominic, Bessie, and Louis all do farm labor on the home farm.

Their neighbors include Angelo Ingrassia, 48 (b. 1872), wife Katie and their children; Andrea Cannaliato, 19 (b. 1901), and wife Sarah; and Felix Grizzaffi, 35 (b. 1885), wife Mary and their children.[6]

In the 1930 federal census of Brazos County, Texas, taken 23 April, Frank Mauro, 56 (b. 1874), heads a household on “Bryan an Tabor road” with his wife Angelina, 47 (b. 1883), and children Bessie, 23 (b. 1907), Louis, 22 (b. 1908), Camilla, 18 (b. 1912), Nora, 15 (b. 1915), Lena, 14 (b. 1916), Vancie, 13 (b. 1917), Josephine, 10 (b. 1920), and Janie, 8 (b. 1922). Frank and Angelina married when he was 30 and she was 18. They were both born in Italy and their children in Texas. Frank emigrated in 1896 and Angelina in 1898. He is naturalized, she is not. He is a farmer and the six oldest children (those over 12) all do farm labor as well.

Living nearby are the households of Mike Triolo, 58 (b. 1872), and wife Lena, 45 (b. 1885), and Ben Patronella, 29 (b. 1901), and wife Mary, 28 (b. 1902).[7]

In the 1940 federal census of Brazos County, Texas, taken 5 April, Frank Mauro, 66 (b. 1874), heads a household on Bryan Rd. He owns his home, worth $2500. With him are his wife, Angelina, 56 (b. 1884), born in Italy, and their children: Lewis, 32 (b .1908), Lena, 25 (b. 1915), Vancie, 21 (b. 1919), and Janie, 17 (b. 1923), all born in Texas. Frank is a farmer working on his own account. Lewis is a “marketman” in a retail meat shop, working on his own account. Lena and Vancie do unpaid farm labor.

His neighbors are Tony Reina, 45 (b. 1895), and Frances, 41 (b. 1898), and their children.[8]


Death of Frank

Frank Mauro, 81, was a member of the San Leoluca society. He was born in Corleone on 22 January 1874. His obituary appears in the Eagle on 25 May 1955. He is an early settler of Brazos County. Died at home 506 North Parker that day. His 6 grandsons are pallbearers: Barney and Frank Mauro, Luke and John Patranella, Marion Scarmardo, all of Bryan, and Dr. Tony Barcelona Jr. of Houston. Widow is Angela, leaves 2 sons and 6 daughters including Mrs. Frank L. Patranella. Also leaves 3 brothers, Steve in Los Angeles, Joe and Luke in Houston.[9]
