Biography

[1]"Nathaniel Maxey, a son of William Maxey and his second wife Mary, inherited 400 acres of his father's patent land which fell into the new county of Buckingham when it was formed from a part of Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1761. Surviving pages of the tithe lists of Cumberland County, Virginia, show four of the sons and two grandsons of Edward and Susannah, in 1758 through 1768. Natt Maxey "Jr." is listed in 1763 with 5 tithables.

Nathaniel married twice and is said to have had 14 children. Some genealogists have given the name of his first wife and mother of all his children as Ruth Ford (born 14 February 1745), a daughter of James and Anne (Bondurant) Ford, but there has been no primary documentation found to prove that she grew up and married Nathaniel. The name of his second wife was Elizabeth.

It has been possible to ascertain the names of some of his sons by a study of the land and personal property tax records of Buckingham County which began in 1782. (These records were housed elsewhere at the time of the courthouse fire.) Nathaniel always was located in District A and was on the rolls as one taxable from 1782 until 1785 when he had two over 21 (himself and one son), and in 1787 this son was identified as Thomas. The following year Nathaniel had another son, William, of taxable age, and in 1789 added son Nathaniel, Jr. Thomas had a separate listing in that year as he had already married. In 1792 "Ned" or Edward was added to his sons of taxable age, with Samuel appearing in 1796. By 1798 he had three taxable sons living with him: Edward, Samuel and Jacob. In 1809 — there were no taxes taken in the state in 1808 — the records report "Nathaniel Maxey, dec'd estate." According to most of these records his residence was on Muddy Creek, ten miles northeast of the courthouse.

There have been other children ascribed to Nathaniel, but no proof has been uncovered in our research so they have been omitted in the genealogical sequence below. They were given as John; Elizabeth, who married Isaac Baber; Keziah; Olivia and Malinda."
