William was born in 1744. He was the son of Sylvanus Maxey and Mary Worley.

He married twice. At present, the maiden name of the first wife is unknown. Her first name was Elizabeth. They are believed to have had seven children.[1]

He separated from his first wife Elizabeth according to a notice he published in the Virginia Gazette and General Advertiser on 07 Dec 1796 in which he said she absconded from his house and he was no longer responsible for her debt.[2] That reference listed his wife's name at that time as Elizabeth.

He married second Elizabeth Chambers. They had only one child - William Chambers Maxey, according to a stepson of William Chambers Maxey.[3]

He moved from Virginia to Warren county, KY by 1800. He was listed on a tax list there.[4]

He was still living in Warren, Kentucky in 1810. His household appeared to include himself, wife Elizabeth, and youngest son William Chambers Maxey. He was listed next to son John Maxey's household on the census.[5]

He passed away in 1824. [6] His will was written on 26 May 1820 and probated in October 1824.[7]

Maxey's of Virginia P. 377 William served as a soldier in the Indian War in 1760, and also as a private in the Revolutionary war in 1779 under Capt. James Gunn. On 27 Aug 1770, about the time of his fathers death. William received a patent of land containing 391 acres in Prince Edward, Virginia on the South Side of the Appomattox River. He appeared on the tax book of Buckingham County, District A, in 1782-1787, then moved to District B where his brother Charles resided. He received a grant of 380 acres in Buckingham county on 14 April 1789 which was located on both sides of Little Fishpond Creek, a branch of the Appomattox River. He sold 50 acres in 1794 and remainder about 1797 when he left for Kentucky. William had 188 acres south of the Green River in Kentucky surveyed on 8 Aug 1800. This land was located on the Gasper River in Warren County. In his will dated 26 May 1820 he left to Sarah Goodson, Nancy Doyal, Turbyfield, Edward, John, Polly Taylor and Patsy Perry one dollar each, and after the death of his wife Elizabeth all his personal possessions were to go to his youngest son, William Chambers Maxey. William had sold his 188 acres to his son William c. 12 Jun 1819 for $20[8]

Research Questions

Who was William's first wife? Her given name was believed to be Elizabeth.[9] Some believe her name may have been Turbyfield; however there are no records (at present) to document that. They had a son with given name Turbyfield.

The William Maxey who married Elizabeth R. Watkins appears to be different than this William Maxey. The Powhatan county marriage index was mistranscribed as 17 May 1784 when it was actually 17 May 1814.

Removing the Powhattan marriage index as a source for this William Henry Maxey.

Saving the record in the comments as it might be useful for a later couple.

I believe that was the will of the son of William Paul Henry Maxey, son of Edward Maxey and Susannah Gates. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Maxey-228

It appears that not all of his children have been added. These are the children I have for William Paul Henry Maxey and his wife Mary Elizabeth Sublett: Mary Maxey (wife of George Davis) John Maxey Nathaniel Edward Maxey Keziah Maxey (wife of Sylvanus Worley, they married after this will.) Jemima Maxey (wife of Joseph Albertus Salley, they married after this will) Biddy Maxey (wife of Edmund Ayres, they married after this will) Karen Happuch Maxey (wife of Jacob Bondurant Sallee)

I did not have a son Sylvanus so he must have been deceased by 1768 or it refers to a nephew.

Can someone make heads or tails out of this?
