Biography

Sarah's son, Samuel Everett Caudill, wrote the following about his mother and her family:

"Sarah Elizabeth May, daughter of Harvey Trimble and Lydia Conley May, was born August 30, 1862, at Bonanza in Floyd County, Ky. m Sept. 12, 1883, Thomas Marion Caine a son of Oliver W. Caine from Magoffin County, Ky.

In the 1860s and 70s, Floyd County had no county school system. Sarah Elizabeth and her brothers and sisters attended a 3-month subscription school in their neighborhood. Parents who had school-age children would sign an agreement to send their children to a 3-month school and agree to help pay, maybe $25 to someone to teach the school. That was called a subscription school. Sarah Elizabeth joined the United Baptist Church at Bonanza while a teenager. She was baptized by a Rev. Conley.

My grandparents, Harvey Trimble May, b Mar 25, 1836, d Sept. 12, 1888, and Lydia Conley May, b Jan 9, 1836, d Dec. 21, 1917. They were m Sept. 8, 1853. They are buried at Bonanza in Floyd county. Harvey had long white beard and was a United Baptist minister.

The May family’s lineage of descent is from Caleb May, b 1781, d 1827, near Salyersville, to Blair May, b Nov. 15, 1808, to Harvey Trimble May, b Mar 25, 1836 to Sarah Elizabeth May, b Aug. 30, 1862. Sarah Elizabeth was m(1) Sept. 12, 1883, Thomas Marion Caine, d about 1887. She m(2) 1890, Winston Caudill.

Harvey Trimble May and Lydia (Conley) May had 14 children including my mother Sarah Elizabeth.

SARAH ELIZABETH MAY AND THOMAS MARION CAINE Children:

• Lydia Jane Caine, b July 6, 1884, d Dec. 9, 1966, m (1) Andrew J. Burchett, m (2) William Jeffords.
• Stella Blaine Caine, b Dec 29, 1885, m Jan. 29, 1903, Joseph Robert Baldridge, b Sept. 10, 1879, deceased. Stella died Jan. 15, 1954, at her home Staffordsville, KY. Robert came from Greasy Creek to teach the Froghonary school. He boarded at our house. Stella was one of his students. He and Stella were courting on the sly and when school was out in Jan. 1903, he and Stella got married.
• Julia May Caine, b Feb. 21, 1887, d Apr. 24, 1976, m Feb. 9, 1905, Willie Daniel, b May 10, 1883, d Feb. 22, 1972, at age 88, a son of Landon Taylor Daniel and my Aunt Fanny Caudill Daniel. Aunt Fanny was a sister to my father, Winston Caudill. That made Willie and me first cousins and he became my brother-in-law. Julia was a daughter of my mother and Thomas Marion Caine. Julia was born at Bonanza, Floyd Co. and Willie was born at Mingo, in Johnson Co. Julia and Willie were members of the Old Hood United Baptist Church. Willie had been a minister in the United Baptist Church for many years. They are both buried at the Old Hood Church in the Sparks Cemetery. They lived on the Head of the Buckbranch fork of Froghonary where all their children were born and later moved to Charley in Lawrence County."
