Joshua was born on 25 July 1735 in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay. Joshua was the son of James and Elisabeth (Higgins) Mayo.[1]

Joshua married Lydia Pepper on 22 April 1758 in Orleans, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.[2]

Their children reportedly included

  1. Rebecca Pepper, b. about 1760;
  2. Henry, b. 1762;
  3. Robert b. 1763;
  4. Elizabeth, b. 1766;
  5. Joseph, b. 1770;
  6. Hannah, b. 1773;
  7. Joshua, b. abt. 1774;

Joshua enlisted in Wellfleet, Massachusetts Bay, in the Revolutionary War on 4 January 1776. He was a private in Captain Bliss's Company and Colonel Paterson's Massachusetts Regiment. He was in the Battle of Trenton at the capture of the Hessians and discharged on 4 January 1777. Joshua afterwards enlisted and served eight months in the land service and four months in naval service.[3][4]

Sometime after 1777, but before 1790, Joshua and family removed to Mount Desert, Hancock County, Province of Maine. Joshua's household in 1790[5] included 3 males over 16 (self and likely sons Joshua Jr. and Isaac) and 2 females (wife Lydia and daughter Joanna). Joshua's household in 1800 included 1 male 26-44; 1 male 45+ (self); and 1 female 45+ (wife Lydia).

The Revolutionary War Pension Application dated 19 May 1818[6] was submitted by Joshua from Mount Desert. Joshua was 82 years of age at the time of his application. The file also included date of Joshua's death in Mount Desert on 11 January 1820.

Joshua was in a pension roll in 1818 in Maine, United States.[7]
