Biography

This profile is part of the Maize Name Study.

Abraham was born about 1760. He passed away about 1835. Goodwin and Phebe (Johnson) Mayes. Goodwin Mayes, Sr., was the brother of Abraham Mayes, father of Elias P. Mayes. Three brothers, Goodwin, Abraham, and David, sons of Henry and Phebey Mayes of Henry Co, VA, migrated to the Leipers Lick Creek area of northwest Maury Co, TN about 1805. Indications are that they left Henry Co, VA, went to NC for a while, then moved on to middle TN. It turns out that Elizabeth P. Mayes, daughter of Abraham and Ellenor Mayes, married her cousin, Miles H. Mayes, who was the son of Goodwin and Phebe (Johnson) Mayes.

In 1823 Maury County, TN he is selected to lay out a road from Williamsport to Franklin. Some of the others selected were William Oakley, James Oakley, Brittan Gardner and John Fly.

* Deed in Maury County provides descendant is Elias Mays.

Maize-73 Heather Maize
Mays-1751 and Maize-51 appear to represent the same person because: I believe this is the same person as details from census, military records, written community histories, and family records show definitively. [i.e. wife’s name Phebey Harrel.] It’s possible that neither last spelling of the last name at birth is accurate due to several occurrences of “Mayes” spelling. The spelling definitely evolved over the years.
