Mary "Mollie" McCann was born in 1741 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Her parents may have been John Mason McCann and Eleanor Lewis. In 1759 she married John H. Cleveland.[1][2][3][4]
Mollie's husband was a Baptist clergyman, Rev. "Preacher John" Cleveland. They made their way south, with pack-horses, cutting their way through cane and brush as they traveled. They settled along the Tugaloo River, on both the South Carolina and the Georgia side, and were among the first settlers to populate that area in 1785, when it was still inhabited by Indians. [5]
Mary passed away in 1808, in Clevelands Ferry, Pendleton County, South Carolina. (The county names changed from Pendleton to Pickens to Oconee.) She was buried in Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery, Fair Play, Oconee, South Carolina.[2]
