Research Notes
As no marriage record has been found, it is difficult to determine which Catherine McCarthy of the many that are found in the area is the wife and mother of this family. At first, it was thought to be the Catherine born near Killarny but this highly conjectural and certainly not the closest.
From the baptismal records of the five children identified, we know that they were born in the range of 1835 to 1847. Normally, women married in their 20's but if we assume that she was at least 18 when she married, then we can assume she was born on or before 1816. Most women did not have children past age 46, so we can be confident Catherine was born after 1801. Her entry in the death registry claims she was 86 with an imputed birth year of 1815. One possibility is this Catherine born 15 Apr 1811.[2] Another example is closer to the 1815 date but in faraway Killarney.[3]
