John Salmon Sr. of Goochland County Virginia, married Eleanor but her maiden name was not repeat was not McCarty. There was a Eleanor McCarty who married John Lemon 10 Apr 1748 in a small church in Stafford, Stafford County Virginia.. How do I know that John Salmon did not marry Eleanor McCarty, because I am the one that made this bad error in genealogy the early part of 1980s. Here is how the error was made. I was doing research and ordered microfiche of county records on microfiche film. I was looking on one such film for marriages in Virginia in the 1700s. And I found the marriage of Eleanor McCarty and John Lemon. Note, all documents at this time period was written by quill pens. Some people does a good job with a quill pen but others do not as it was with this marriage that was on file. I could not really tell the capital "L" form a "S." and the "e" from an "a". So, it look to me as being Samon. But I was still skeptic and felt it need more research. This was a time in my life that I was having trouble with my teenagers. I had to give up genealogy. Family and work, in that order, are the most important things in life. So, genealogy was put on the back burner for now and I was unable to check this marriage in depth. Now, the major error. I told another genealogist about what I found and that more research is need . I expect him to do the research but he did not. I realized now that I should have kept my mouth shut and this problem would not exist today. You just can't unring a bell or put the bullet back into the gun. When I got back to genealogy, a few years later, most people was using Eleanor McCarty as the wife of John Salmon. When I went back to recheck the research, I found the it was John Lemon that married Eleanor. It seems the there were several families of Lemon in that little church in Stafford County Virginia . I never found John Salmon being in Stafford County. Also, all of John Salmon children was born before 1748 with the exception of Rowland. (Note: the records that I found in Virginia during the 1700s on all the Salmons, had the name spelled as Salmon without the "s",) I, Garroll Salmons, swear on a stack of Bibles and as GOD is my witness, everything I said here is true. You can email me at garrolls at gmail.com if anyone have questions.
