Samuel Hill McChesney[1] was born on 28 May 1808 (probably in Washington County), Virginia, the fifth of nine children and the second son of Thomas and Sarah "Sallie" Sharpe McChesney.

Samuel appears in the 1830 census for Washington County, Virginia as Samuel McChesny, living in a household of six persons, four free whites and two slaves.

His household was comprised of one Free White Male - 40 thru 49: one Free White Female - 5 thru 9: one Free White Female - 10 thru 14: one Free White Female - 40 thru 49: one Slave Female Under 10, one Slaves Females - 24 thru 35. Thus there were a Total of four Free White Persons and two Slaves, for a grand total of six persons.[2]
On 11 July 1834, when he was 26 years old, Samuel married his second cousin who had not yet turned eighteen. Rosanna Melissa McConnell (1816-1855), the daughter of William and Elizabeth "Betsie" King McConnell, a fairly prosperous family (William reported $7200 of real property in the 1850 census).
Note: Rosanna eloped against, her father's will.[3]
Samuel lived less than three and a half-years after their marriage and died of unknown causes on Christmas Eve 1838, at the age of thirty.[4] He had fathered two children, both boys, Thomas and Wallace.
