John McClain was born in 1750 in Bedford County, Virginia. Best estimate is that he married Rachel Morgan about 1777 in Bedford County. He was still there with his family for the 1810 Census. [1] Sometime after that date they arrived in Shelby County, Kentucky [2][3] where, in 1812, he passed away.
Death
Alternate unsourced death given as 25 Dec 1812 • Shelby, Kentucky, United States.
Military
Virtually every able bodied male of age was in some form of military service particularly in the frontier settlements, but records are notoriously sparse. There are references to John McClains in different military units, but whether any one of them is this John McClain is indeterminate. [4][5][6][7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
David McClain lived in Frederick Co, VA in 1750; whereas John McClain was born in Bedford Co, VA that same year - 180 miles apart today. Possible but hardly likely.
David was in Washington Co, PA from 1782 to 1790. He bought land in Jefferson Co, KY (became Shelby Co) in 1790. John lived in Bedford Co until he came to Shelby Co, about 1811 (and died the next year) - 20 plus years after David came there. Today Washington Co is 330 miles due north of Bedford Co, and Bedford Co to Shelby Co is 430 miles.
David was 90 years-old when he mentioned his son John in his 1803 Shelby Co will, and 98 years-old by the time John arrived in Kentucky from Bedford Co, VA. They would have had just enough time together to shake hands.
There had to be at least two John McClains in Shelby Co (ours dies 1812); and, by 1811, two David McClains: one in Shelby Co (also about to die) and one back in Washington Co, PA.
All the above make it implausible John McC of Bedford Co, VA could be the son of David McC of Washington Co, PA.
I concur wholeheartedly. The David McClain who spent several years in Washington County, PA cannot be the father of the John McClain who was born in Bedford county, VA. And I agree that the confusion is the result of 2 different John McClains that were apparently in Shelby County, KY after 1800. One was married to Catherine Horton and was probably the son of the David McClain of Washington County. The other was married to Rachel Morgan and came from Bedford County, VA.

1832 • A John McClain applied in person in Rockbridge County, Virginia for a pension (#S5744) for Revolutionary War service. But John McClain & Rachael Morgan emigrated to Kentucky in 1811 where he died in 1812, she in 1829. He cannot be that same John McClain.
McClean-185 and McClain-1220 are not ready to be merged because: Serious conflation going on here that needs to be carefully untangled. No merge, two people here that are tangled together.
McClean-185 and McClain-1220 appear to represent the same person because: I am sorry, I messes up the profile of McClain-1220 adding John McClean-185 to my wife's tree. Per an old bible from her Maternal side, the name is spelled McClean in the bible. I am still learning. These are the same person. Too many facts are the same not to be. If you can fix the mess or tell me how and I will.
